Geek Bits: S.H.I.E.L.D. Skipping Avengers, Lost Hunger Games Trailer, Asylum of Daleks Review and More [Links]

What if Star Wars and X-Men Combined?

Could the Hunger Games movie been more like Mad Max? Was the first episode of Doctor Who worth watching? How many Avengers will be in the SHIELD TV series Which Star Trek: The Next Generation actor is working on their own Star Trek movie?

Image of the week by Rey Arzeno via Comic Book Movie

I’m simplifying the “Geek Bits” to make it more accessible. If you want trivia or the motivational geek quote of the week let me know in the comments. I’m bringing back a feature I had when it was called “This Week In Geek” which uses ODDSMAKERS, OVERUNDER and TOSS-UP. For more details go here. If you love it or hate it let me know. Next week I’m adding a new feature, so stay tuned.

Some of these may be familiar if you follow us on Twitter @thegeektwins. But, in case you missed it…

    Dorn Working on Worf Movie

Michael Dorn, who played the Klingon Worf on Star Trek:TNG and DS9 says he’s working on a movie based his character. “Interestingly enough it has gotten traction.” Dorn said. “I was very surprised, I was on a movie not too long ago, where one of the producers was basically lobbying to be part of it. He was like ‘Michael, I’d love to write it, if you haven’t.’ So at this point, my agents and my manager are looking at all the avenues and trying to figure out which is the best one. My agent and manager have been in the business for awhile, so they’re very savvy about where to start and how to get it going. Like I said, in this business you never know and I’ve been through pitching things and I never want to do that again [laughs]. It’s pretty brutal, but definitely I think once again, if Paramount or CBS or anybody thinks this is a viable thing, they’ll jump on it.” I love the idea of Worf being the captain of a Federation ship “out there in the front lines basically chasing terrorists” but it’s never going to happen. With the J.J. Abrams reboot we don’t even know if the Klingons exist in the future. His best bet would be a webseries or fan film.

ODDSMAKERS: What are the odds this movie will hit theaters?

Doctor Who S7 E1 “Asylum of the Daleks” Review [3 1/2 out of 5]

The new season of Doctor Who started with an all Dalek episode as the Doctor is kidnapped by the Daleks to find the source of a signal from a planet called “The Asylum” for crazy Daleks. Yes, they get crazier. The Doctor (Matt Smith) was great as always and Amy (Karen Gillian) and Rory got to explore their relationship a little. The episode was a let-down for me since the idea of being trapped on a planet of insane Daleks didn’t deliver the chases and thrills I was expecting. Also, the ending was a rip off of another movie. I’m hiding the name of the movie since it spoils twist endings for the show and the movie. Highlight the text to read it ***SOURCE CODE***.

Anyway, it was a good episode and I give it 3 1/2 stars (Good, Should watch at least once)

    The OTHER Hunger Games Trailer

Back when Lionsgate was looking for a director for The Hunger Games, Kevin Tancharoen delivered a mash-up trailer to show his vision of the film. The studio passed on him, but /Film got the exclusive trailer. It’s a much grittier and more violent version of the film. Actually it could have worked.

OVERUNDER: Tanchareon’s film would have more or less successful than the one we’ve seen.

S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series Won’t Be Avengers Sequel

I’m excited about the Joss Whedon S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. But news has broken that it’ll have very little to do with The Avengers. So we won’t see Iron Man or Captain America. Whedon said, “I get to really build a show with people I really trust and love. What we’re building is entirely autonomous from The Avengers. It’s gotta be a show that works for people who haven’t seen the Marvel movies. It will please Marvel fans, I think.” That makes sense, but I’m sorry he’s distancing the show from the movie. But I’ve loved every show he’s done, so I know he won’t disappoint us.

OVERUNDER: The S.H.I.E.L.D. series last two seasons.

A movie about Worf would be great! He was my wife's favorite Star Trek character.

      • Maurice Mitchell on September 9, 2012 3:02 am

Worf was a complex character Alex.

"ODDSMAKERS: What are the odds this movie will hit theaters?"
In my Michael Wilbon voice I would shout, "ZERO PERCENT!!!" At best it might go straight to DVD.

I would definitely take the under on that other Hunger Games movie being successful. I mean people (like yourself for instance) were unnerved by even the toned-down violence and stuff so I don't think a darker, grittier version would have worked for a lot of people. It still probably would have had a big opening if only because of the book's following.

      • Maurice Mitchell on September 9, 2012 3:07 am

Glad I got the PTI reference Pat! DVD is the way to go. You're right about the opening being big. One vote for under.

    3. Natasha Dythia on September 7, 2012 6:27 pm

I think it is a good Idea to take S.H.I.E.L.D in a different direction without the Avengers – it will be neat to see the othe side of S.H.I.E.L.D

      • Maurice Mitchell on September 9, 2012 3:16 am

The other side would be cool, but of it's too much like CSI I might get bored. I hour they throw in a supervillain or two.

    4. Anthony G. Laplume on September 8, 2012 1:13 am

The Worf movie needs to happen. It would be legendary.

    5. Lydia Kang on September 8, 2012 1:34 am

I would totally love to see a Worf movie!

      • Maurice Mitchell on September 9, 2012 3:18 am

Lydia, it seems like everyone is excited about the idea. Maybe it would happen after all

    6. Maurice Mitchell on September 9, 2012 3:00 am

Tony, it would be great. He was great when he was a captain on TNG.
