On the same day that the DCU’s Superman trailer is being released, Marvel released the first trailer for Ironheart. The show will debut with three episodes in June, for a total of six episodes.
Ooof.
Watch the trailer below:
Given that Disney has declared that it is reducing the number of TV shows it produces, most likely for this reason, it is nearly impossible to believe that Ironheart is anything other than an afterthought. Despite having no apparent link to the guy and their stories not overlapping when the character was initially presented in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a fragmented element of that movie, the new spot features Riri Williams, the architect of a new, Stark-like suit in the wake of his death.
Ryan Coogler is still an executive producer on the series, but Ironheart doesn’t look good in this trailer. It doesn’t seem likely that Disney believes in it all that much with this kind of promotion and that airing schedule. Ryan Coogler seemed to want to show her off in the sequel film that he directed.
Given that her custom-made outfit requires significant computer-generated imagery, this is undoubtedly another extremely costly production. Or to lower the budget, perhaps they don’t use the suit as much as they should.
Dumping all the episodes in two days (three per day) feels like when Ms. Marvel aired alongside the more heavily promoted Kenobi series. In the congested Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ms. Marvel is a welcome change. As Kamala Khan, Iman Vellani is a true pleasure to watch, and the series is among the most distinctive in the MCU. However, it has the lowest opening of any Disney+ series. This is because Disney chose to release its first three episodes concurrently with Obi-Wan Kenobi, their eagerly awaited Star Wars series.
In a time when Disney approved many Marvel series regardless of their concept, budget, or quality, this feels like one of the final shows. These days, they appear to be more interested in more affordable, spectacular series like Punisher, Daredevil, and most likely many more “street-focused” characters who don’t zip around in bulky suits of armor.
It was announced that Krysten Ritter is returning as Jessica Jones at a glitzy event yesterday. Meanwhile, Disney dumps the Ironheart trailer on a Wednesday morning while everyone waits for Superman. For shame Marvel.
