This week, my brother I will be reposting some of our favorite blog posts that didn’t get enough attention. Quick note that I’m not going to post our guide for The Hunger Games (2012) since we didn’t really get enough comments. But, if you want some good info check out the comments on Monday’s post. From the Asylum, the studio who brought us Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, comes a spiritual sequel titled Megapiranha. I say spiritual sequel, since it doesn’t feature the same characters or plot, but it’s clearly meant to be a follow-up. After all, how many movie…
This week, my brother I will be reposting some of our favorite blog posts that didn’t get enough attention. With the success of the silent film The Artist (2012) I thought this post was appropriate. Back in 1994, a group of amateur filmmakers asked themselves an important question: what if Star Trek had been made in the silent movie era? The result is the fantastic fan video Steam Trek: The Moving Picture. A hilarious combination of steampunk and sight gags, this is the movie Charlie Chaplin would have made if he liked sci-fi. Or if sci-fi had existed in his…
This week, my brother I will be reposting some of our favorite blog posts that didn’t get enough attention. The economy is hitting everyone hard, and the Star Wars universe is no exception. So what would happen if characters from Star Wars had to advertise for their services? We think it would look something…like this. Want more Star Wars ads? Any other Star Wars characters that should advertise? Let us know in the comments. Originally posted February 2012 [Image Source: geektwins]
This week, my brother I will be reposting some of our favorite blog posts that didn’t get enough attention. With the upcoming Iron Man sequel The Avengers I thought this post was a good one to flashback to. Justin Hammer in the movie Iron Man 2 was an incompetent and awkward rival who was mainly there to provide resources for the real villain, Whiplash. In the comics, Hammer was much, much more. Ruthless and cunning, Justin Hammer was one of Tony Stark’s greatest enemies, even though he had no powers or weapons of his own. Hammer was a billionaire industrialist…
The movie The Hunger Games (2012) comes out this week. It’s based on a best-selling series of young adult novels written by Suzanne Collins, but I’d never heard of it before they announced the movie. I don’t know anything about it. A Google search could tell me a lot, but I’d rather hear about it from someone who knows. So, I’m asking you. The best responses will be collected together into a blog post this Friday. What can you tell me about The Hunger Games? Have you read the books? What should I know before I see the film?
This week’s links include a hilarious AvengersFriends mashup trailer, a cool Mystique wallpaper, an award for medical blogging and motivational words from Spock.
Have you ever thought about having plastic surgery? If so, you’re not alone. In 2011 there were 13.8 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed. Plastic surgery is a multimillion dollar industry and there are plenty of doctors willing to cash in. Some do amazing work, while other patients end up looking like Joan Rivers. In the world of science-fiction there have been some amazing plastic surgeons, and some really psychotic ones. Here are seven plastic surgeons that cut, stretched and sliced their patient’s into infamy. 1. Dr. Jaffe from Brazil (1985) The most low tech facelift you could ask for.…
The world of Star Trek is fantastical and amazing. Impossible you say. But, wait! Reality is catching up to science-fiction. Since the show first aired, back in the 1960’s, technology is catching up to the world envisioned by Gene Roddenberry. Mary Pax, the blogger of Wistful Nebulae and MPax-TheWebsite was the first recipient of our “Weird Science” award. She’s also an author and astronomer. We’re honored that she agreed to do a guest post on our blog. With no further adieu, we now present the guest post of M. Pax. Thanks to Maurice of the Geek Twins for having me on this awesome blog today.…
This week we have two action films, four classic Doctor Who episodes on Blu-Ray and a cheesy straight-to-DVD knock off of Snow White. Before I get to this weeks post I just wanted to announce that M. Pax is doing a guest post on our blog tomorrow! Make sure you come back for her cool list of Star Trek tech. Hot The Three Musketeers [Blu-Ray 3D] Orlando Bloom (Actor), Logan Lerman (Actor), Paul W.S. Anderson (Director) Logan Lerman and Orlando Bloom star in a swashbuckling update to Alexandre Dumas classic novel, The Three Musketeers. Re-imagined as a stylistic and explosive…
Could the Jedi Master have turned to the Dark Side of the Force? Not likely, but one artist dared to dream. Rabittooth has come up with the ultimate Dark Lord of the Sith: Darth Yoda! Check out his site, since he also has a pretty cool Jedi Spock. What do you think of Darth Yoda? [Image Source: http://www.rabittooth.com]
In the movie, The Terminator, the android T-800 had a goal. He was sent back in time to terminate Sarah Connors, the mother of the future resistance leader. While he didn’t succeed, we can learn a lot about goals from him. I was an auto mechanic for a while. Actually, I have a degree in automotive maintenance. Usually, when I tell people the next words are, “You were a mechanic?!” It doesn’t really fit. When people hear I’m a computer technician they say, “That makes sense.” It fits. What does that have to do with the Terminator? The reason I…
The following is cross-posted from my other blog Film Sketchr. Ralph McQuarrie, the Academy Award winning concept artist on the original Star Wars trilogy and dozens of films died Saturday in his home at 82. Since I started this blog, I’ve been compiling a list of the top 100 concept artists in the industry. The hardest part was not coming up with number one, but number two. McQuarrie was the most well-known and influential concept artist ever. There are hundreds of amazing artists, but it’s hard to think of anyone that came close to him. Despite creating designs that inspired…
The most quote-worthy film ever made is on Blu-Ray this week along with two classically bad movies, a WWII anime film and the best, worst TV movie ever made. 1. At an event, a fan approached George Lucas and politely asked him for the theatrical release of Star Wars on Blu-Ray. He rolled his eyes and snapped, “Grow up. These are my movies, not yours.” They are his movies, but we have a right to enjoy them unaltered. They’re our movies too. We paid for them. A few months ago, I posted some reasons Why We Should Have a Screening of the Original Star Wars. A lot of my research came from the awesome Star Wars fansite SaveStarWars.com. Since 2010, the site is dedicated to making “visible a disturbing and frustrating…
Here are this week’s stories you might have missed in the blogosphere. What order should a newbie watch the Star Wars series in? What rating did one reviewer give “The Rock’s” Journey 2? Would you have bought a Star Wars basketball? Are you looking to buy a superhero costume for your pet? What rare comics did two brothers unexpectedly inherit? Who’s bummed out by the recent Star Trek 2 leaks? Where in the world is Alex J Cavanaugh? What famous superhero sold corn flakes? How many good-looking Korean actors are in Real Steel? 1. Trivia Question In the movie Close…
The Hulk is a hard guy to work with. He’s rude, mean, angry and can throw truck through a window. “This isn’t a team. It’s a time bomb.” Bruce Banner says and we all know he’s right. The idea of him working in a team is hard to swallow. But, he also has a soft side and the new trailer shows it. Here are a bunch of images from the new trailer that show Hulk petting kittens. Not exactly, but it’s pretty sweet for a big, green, rage machine like the Hulk. WARNING: The images are in high-resolution (1920×1136), so…
Share your opinion of who played the best Catwoman (Selina Kyle) from Batman. After the Academy Awards this year, Sean Young made headlines for alledgedly slapping a security guard at an After-Party. She’s had a long career, but all the articles reminded of her infamous campaign for the role of Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. It made me wonder. Anne Hathaway is playing Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises (2012). What does it take to play the character right? Will Hathaway be able to pull it off? Who was your favorite Catwoman and why? Julie Newmar Eartha Kitt Lee Meriwether Michelle Pfeiffer Halle Berry…
We got a press release from an awesome blogger, Alex J. Cavanaugh, about the release of his latest book CassaFire and an awesome contest he’s hosting. It’s a sequel to his book CassaStar which has a 4.4 out of 5 rating on Amazon. Today is the Catch Fire Blog Party, celebrating the release of CassaFire by Alex J. Cavanaugh! The goal is to help CassaFire “catch fire” on the best seller charts and achieve the success of the first book, CassaStar. There’s also a special package of prizes being given away at the author’s blog (copies of CassaFire, CassaStar, tote bag,…

The Academy Awards have come and gone and here is a list of bad sci-fi movies that stars like Christopher Plummer wants you to forget. An Academy Award is a powerful thing. Just being nominated for an award is considered the height of an actors career. Of course, every actor has highs and lows. In the history of all great actors are the films that they hope don’t come up at parties. The films that they made when they were desperate, drunk or both. From Marlon Brando to Ernest Borgnine, here are eleven Academy Award winning actors who’ve made horrible,…
This weeks links feature our latest blog award, a white guy winning an NAACP award and the most disgustingly nerdy cake I’ve ever seen. Contents 1. Trivia Question 2. Motivational Geek Quote 3. Award 4. Links 4. Trivia Answer 1. Trivia Question What series of Star Trek won the first Emmy award for the franchise? 2. Motivational Geek Quote “You know, Captain, every year of my life I grow more and more convinced that the wisest and the best is to fix our attention on the good and the beautiful. If you just take the time to look at it.” – Lt.…
Casting is a tricky thing. When it’s good, it’s great. When it’s bad, it’s awful. Christopher Reeve was the perfect Superman and casting genius, but the casting decisions haven’t all been that good. Some have been truly bizarre. From casting comedic actors in serious roles to serious actors with comedic acting skills the history of Superman films is littered with actors that just aren’t right! Here’s a list of nine truly bizarre casting choices in recent history from the bizarre Nicholas Cage to the goofy Tim Allen. 9. Jon Cryer as Luthor’s Nephew The costar of Two and a Half…
For all the arguments and debate about the Star Wars changes, one change is clearly right: Han Solo didn’t shoot first. Of all the changes to the Star Wars films, the one that gets cited most often is having Greedo shoot at Han Solo first. It seems ridiculous. We all saw Han shoot Greedo, and it was pretty cool really. Then, in the 1997 “Special Edition,” effects were added to make it seem as if Greedo shot at Solo and he shot back. If you’ve never seen it, or don’t remember it, you can watch the video comparison below. Fans were…
This week there aren’t that many DVDs out. But, I did find two old cartoon shows and a cheesy bigfoot movie starring David Carradine. 1. Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century – Complete Series 2. Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors: Volume 1 3. Big Foot Flashback 1. As a huge Sherlock Holmes fan I’m kind of happy to see Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century – Complete Series. I caught a few episodes and, while it wasn’t immensely faithful, it’s heart was in the right place. One reviewer on Amazon said it helped him get into the books. Synopsis: After Sherlock…
This picture of the old Marvin the “Paranoid Android” shaking hands with the new one from the film reminds me of my grandmother. I’ll tell you why. There’s something wonderfull about old meeting new. When my late grandma met her great-grandson it was a special moment and a cherished memory. It sends a message of hope and unity. It’s a classic theme. President Obama met President Clinton. Captain Picard met Captain Kirk in Star Trek: Generations. Many of the Doctors have met each other in Doctor Who. Its classic seeing people from other generations meet. Back in 1981, a British…
This week’s links feature a shirtless Cyclops. Which 1970s television show is getting a reboot? When will we see the first trailer for Man of Steel? How many “Beauty and the Beast” films and TV shows are coming? What’s a spider goat? What surprising superhero did a goofy PSA for environmentalism? On February 11, 2012 we lost a great performer in Whitney Houston. We don’t know how she died, but we know how she lived. She had two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards. An amazing total of 415 awards in her…
Now that Mattel is finally releasing a “working” Hoverboard from Back to the Future II, here’s a list of 11 tech that needs to get here before 2015. The future world of Back to the Future II was filled with wild and strangely plausible future technology. Last year we finally got the Nike’s Self-Tying Shoes. This year Mattel is making a Hoverboard that “glides” over “most surfaces.” We already have multiple TV channels and a bunch of other things, but there is some tech that we’re missing. Since we’re three years from the future world of 2015, where are our…
The Day of the Triffids has been a novel (1951) a feature film (1962), two radio dramas (1957 and 1968), and two TV series (1981 and 2009). Now at long last, it’s a folk song. The plot, for those who don’t know, is that the world has been blinded by lights in the sky. Society has fallen apart and walking plants, called Triffids, have taken over and feed on rotting carcasses. Award winning comic book artist David Flint has created a hauntingly beautiful song based on the novel. It’s so happy and shiny it almost makes you glad to be…
There are some huge block-busters coming this year, but there are a few smaller movies coming out you’ll want to keep an eye on. Big blockbusters like The Avengers, the Amazing Spider-Man and the James Bond sequel Skyfall are dominating the headlines, but what about other films like Looper and Gravity? Here’s a list of six films you’ve probably never heard of. Some are big. Some are small. They should all be good. 1. The Hunger Games When Does It Come Out? March, 23 What’s It About? In the future, North America is divided into the Capitol and 12 districts.…

Chrome Shelled Regios 4. Short Circuit/Short Circuit 2 5. They Came From Outer Space – The Complete Television Series 1. The first Doctor Who DVD is Episode 7 “The Sensorites.” This is from the first season with William Hartnell. The Sensorites inspired the Ood in the recent series.
