Star Trek: S. J. Clarkson Will Be the First Woman to Direct a Trek Movie

S.J. Clarkson is reportedly hired to direct the sequel to “Star Trek: Beyond“. She’ll be the first female director in the franchise history.

Yesterday Paramount confirmed they’re working on two more movies in the “Star Trek” franchise. According to Variety, the studio has hired S. J. Clarkson to direct the next film.

While details are scarce they did confirm that Chris Hemsworth will appear in the movie. He’ll be reprising his role from “Star Trek” (2009) as James Kirk’s father George. He sacrificed himself battling the rogue Romulans led by Nero. It’s rumored that the movie will be a time travel story and Chris Pine, as James T. Kirk, will run into his father.

The original 2009 reboot “Star Trek” is critically acclaimed and made $385 million worldwide. The sequel “Star Trek: Into Darkness” made $467 million in 2013. The third movie, “Star Trek Beyond” was a critical success and brought in $343 million worldwide in 2016. But it was widely regarded as a flop.

Clarkson is a British film-maker and is best known for her work on the British shows “Doctors”, “Casualty”, “EastEnders, Footballers’ Wives, and Life on Mars. She’s directed episodes of several U.S. shows including “Orange is the New Black,” “Jessica Jones,” and Marvel’s “The Defenders”.

Paramount hasn’t confirmed it, but it’s still exciting news.
