CW Executive Teases an “Emmy Worthy” Final Season of “Superman and Lois”

Brad Schwartz hinted at a "wonderful" arc for the DC series' final season.

Superman & Lois is returning to our screens after a long break. The fourth and final season of The CW’s DC series, which was recently reported to be premiering on Thursdays this fall, has been renewed. Superman & Lois’s final season’s plot specifics are still mostly unknown, but it sounds like it will be well worth the wait. The CW’s President of Entertainment, Brad Schwartz, expressed his admiration for Superman & Lois’s last season in an interview with TVLine, hinting that the show’s remaining episodes are “f-cking awesome.”

The latest show featuring the Man of Steel has faced several challenges, including budget cuts and strikes following the show’s Season 4 renewal. The writer’s room was reduced from eight writers to five for the forthcoming season because of those cuts.

Warner Bros. Television, the production studio, promised to offer the new seasons of Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming for a much lower licensing fee to make them feasible for the network under its new lower-cost original programming model. As a result, the shows were renewed in June. Budget cuts for the shows were necessary for the studio to continue making money off them, resulting in a fall in the number of series regulars. Not all of them were requested to return on a full-time basis.

Because Superman & Lois has more elaborate visual effects than other CW original dramas, the show has harsher budget cuts. Of the twelve series regulars from Season 3, just four—Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Michael Bishop, and Alex Garfin—will return for Season 4.

“I have watched nine of the 10 episodes and [they are] f–king awesome,” Schwartz said. “It is weekly event television. Greg Berlanti and the producers have constructed 10 bangers. They really go for it. I’ve cried twice watching [the first nine episodes], and I haven’t even gotten to the finale yet. It’s Emmy-worthy. And, by the way, you can watch this final season without having watched the previous [seasons] and still be emotionally invested in what is happening. It’s a wonderful, 10-episode, contained arc.”

When Will the Last Season of Superman & Lois Air?

The last season of Superman & Lois will run sometime in 2024. The last batch of episodes was already postponed because of the strikes in Hollywood last year. Following Smallville’s 2001 premiere, Superman & Lois will be the last DC TV series to air on The CW for the foreseeable future.

“Over the last three seasons, SUPERMAN & LOIS redefined both the superhero genre and family drama as Tyler, Elizabeth and the entire cast effortlessly portrayed these classic characters with new layers of depth and complexity that had never before been explored in the Superman universe,” said The CW Network President of Entertainment, Brad Schwartz. “We are grateful for the years of hard work and graceful storytelling from the show’s writers, producers, actors and crew, as well as our terrific partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions. As Superman embarks on his final flight, the team is leaving us with an absolutely epic 10-episode must-watch-every-minute farewell to one of the most legendary CW families ever.”

“While we’re sad to say goodbye to SUPERMAN & LOIS at the end of Season Four, we’re grateful for the time we’ve had with our amazing cast, crew, VFX teams, editors, musical geniuses, and writers. Since the day this show was first discussed, it was about family. And that’s what was created on and off screen,” said Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher executive producers and co-showrunners. “We’d like to thank our partners at Berlanti Productions, DC, WB, and The CW for their endless support and enthusiasm during this journey…and give a very special thank you to all the fans for tuning in. We’re thrilled about what we have in store in our final season, and can’t wait for everyone to watch as Superman, Lois, and all our heroes face off against the biggest threat in the show’s history – Lex Luthor.”

Who Is Coming Back for Season 4 of Superman & Lois?

The CW renewed four original series for the 2023–2024 season, including Walker, All-American, and All-American: Homecoming, during numerous programming adjustments made by its new parent company, Nexstar. Superman & Lois was merely one of these shows. Dylan Walsh (Sam Lane), Emmanuelle Chiriqui (Lana Lang), Erik Valdez (Kyle Cushing), Inde Navarette (Sarah Cushin), Wole Parks (John Henry Irons), Tayler Buck (Natalie Irons), and Sofia Hasmik (Chrissy Beppo) were all relegated to recurring or guest star roles, it was announced shortly after the Season 4 renewal.

Because of this, Tyler Hoechlin, who plays Clark Kent/Superman, Elizabeth Tulloch, who plays Lois Lane, Michael Bishop, who plays Jonathan Kent, and Alex Garfin, who plays Jordan Kent, will return to their series regular roles in Season 4. In addition, Douglas Smith as Jimmy Olsen and Michael Cudlitz as Lex Luthor has been elevated to series regular roles.
