Infographic: Which Movie Made a Billion Fastest?

Avengers: Endgame is quickly climbing up the box office ladder. It earned an estimated $63 million this past weekend and Avengers: Endgame is now the number one movie at the box office for the third straight weekend in a row. It’s domestic cume now stands at $723.5 million. Endgame is the third movie to ever make more than $700 million domestically. It’s now the third highest grossing domestic release of all-time ahead of Marvel’s Black Panther.

At the time of this writing, there have been 39 movies to make over one billion worldwide and each movie has taken a different path to get there. Some movies, like Avengers: Endgame blast out of the gate and quickly rack up records. Others start slow and march dutifully to the billion dollar mark. Others make a decent amount of money and then get re-released into theaters to make even more like Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

After only 16 days Endgame looks like it might break the record for the highest grossing movie in the world from James Cameron’s Avatar ($2.8 Billion). But which of the movies has made one billion (much less two billion) the fastest? I went through decades of articles for each of the movies and tabulated when each movie made one billion and (when applicable) two billion. The start dates are the earliest international wide release and end on the day the box office totals are determined.

The results are surprising, enlightening and fascinating. I hope you enjoy our latest chart.
