Every character added to the Marvel rights chart in 2024

With the clever and meticulous development of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its unprecedented success over the last ten years (and beyond), Marvel Studios has cemented itself as a major player in mainstream American popular culture. But it can be hard to track which Marvel Comics characters might appear in the next big comic-related project unless you’re familiar with studio deals and corporate history. But worry not—we’re going to reveal which studio is in charge of the film rights to which Marvel superhero.

In our latest update, we added over 300 characters to our chart. It makes it the biggest update we’ve had since we started back in 2014.

This article will only focus on the newly added characters to the chart. You can go back to our original post “Visual Guide To Marvel Character Live-Action Rights” Infographic by the Geek Twins to get an overview of the characters in the past.

Here’s the updated chart dated 2024 (version 9.7)

Visual Guide to Marvel Live-Action Character Rights (v. 9.7) 2024

    20th Century Fox

Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2019. With it, they bought the live-action movie rights to characters like X-Men and Deadpool. But it came with a caveat. While Disney Studios owns the characters, it’s rumored that contracts with the actors prevent them from being recast. That’s why Wolverine is still played by Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart is still Professor Xavier. The contracts are reportedly in place until 2025.

    Mattel Films (Formerly Tyco Toys)

The trucking industry exploded in popularity in the 1970s. Tyco Toys created a line of electric trucking slot cars from 1981 to 1985. They called the toys US-1 and approached Mattel about licensing them for a comic book series. U.S. 1 ran for a healthy twelve issues, which is about eleven more than you would think possible for a publication of that caliber.

The first, written by Al Milgrom and illustrated by Herb Trimpe, established the framework for the primary character, Ulysses Solomon Archer. (U.S Archer). Some characters, like Highwayman, eventually appeared in other comic books. Mattel bought Tyco in 1997 and they hold the rights.

    NFL Productions

The National Football League (NFL) was looking to expand in popularity with young people. So they approached Marvel Comics about developing a comic book series centered on football.

Marvel Comics’ NFL SuperPro comic book series revolves around Phil Grayfield, a former NFL player who wears an almost indestructible football uniform after a freak accident. Published in 1991, the 12-issue series was produced in association with the NFL and initially penned by artist Jose Delbo and writer Fabian Nicieza.

Not only did it run for almost a year but the characters also met Captain America and Spider-Man (of course). But the rights to the characters are wholly owned by the NFL. So they can’t even be used in the comics, much less the movies.

Technically, the NFL could make an NFL Superpro movie that would be groundbreaking and win multiple Academy Awards.

Like Quicksilver, there are some characters owned by both Fox and Marvel. Svetlana Khodchenkova plays Ophelia Sarkissian/Viper in 20th Century Fox’s The Wolverine. This version of the character is never referred to as “Madame Hydra” or her involvement with the organization is mentioned, likely due to rights concerns with Marvel Studios at the time. Instead, she’s a mutant scientist.
