ICYMI: First ONE PIECE Trailer, Juneteenth Sci-Fi Celebration and More

Here is the biggest geek news for Monday, June, 2023

Here are the biggest stories for Monday, June 19, 2023.

The live-action One-Piece trailer has dropped. Juneteenth is celebrated with sci-fi from Black Creators. Jack Kirby’s son is blasting Stan Lee’s legacy. Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is arriving on Blu-ray/DVD in September, and Gal Gadot is feeling empowered to start “developing stories” after Wonder Woman 3’s cancellation.

We can’t always cover everything. So here’s everything you missed this morning. In Case You Missed It (ICYMI).

    Warning: May contain spoilers!

Celebrate Juneteenth With Sci-fi From Black Creators, Stars On Peacock | Syfy

    1. One Piece Trailer: First Look at Netflix’s Live-Action Take on Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates | Tvline

This looks glorious and I can’t wait to watch. I might just pass out when he says his first “Gomu Gomu no Roketto!”

    2. Yoda Was Only In Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi Because Of Some Child Psychology Advice | Slashfilm

Yoda was not originally part of the “Return of the Jedi” script, but child psychologists George Lucas consulted were concerned that younger kids might not believe Darth Vader (David Prowse) when he revealed that he was Luke’s father in “Empire Strikes Back”. Dr. Janina Scarlet, clinical psychologist and author of “Unseen, Unheard, Undervalued,” explained why this was important: “Star Wars explores really complicated topics, including loss, abandonment, betrayal, and trauma. When trying to make sense of such complicated experiences, it can be helpful to have some clarity through the eyes of a wise and compassionate mentor, like Yoda.”

When I was a kid there were many playground arguments that Vader was lying. So Yoda was really important in settling the debate and moving forward.

    3. The Flash Starts Its Theatrical Run With a Stumble | Gizmodo

After a considerably longer and more contentious gestation period than the company expected, Warner Bros.’ The Flash has finally arrived in theaters. According to Variety, the superhero film is currently number one in the United States, with a gross of $55.1 million. It is anticipated to hit $64 million by the end of the four-day weekend, falling short of both the $75-85 million expectations and the $67 million start of last year’s Black Adam.

Frankly, it was idiotic of the studio to assume everyone would forget about Miller’s antics. Plus, while the movie got rave reviews on social media it has a paltry 66% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing.

    4. Prepare For Major Comics Delays as UPS Vote to Authorize Strikes | Bleedingcool

The Teamsters union in the US has voted to authorise a strike to take place from the 1st of August 2023, if there is no agreement in the talks between UPS and Teamsters. This vote shows that hundreds of thousands of Teamsters are united and determined to get the best contract in their history at UPS. UPS is the largest package delivery company in the world, delivering more than 20 million packages per day in the US alone. UPS has reached a tentative agreement to get air conditioning fitted across its delivery vans, but only on future purchases. The union is confident there won’t be a need for a strike, and they have reached a tentative agreement to get air conditioning fitted across UPS’ delivery vans. UPS profits have nearly doubled during the five-year life of the current contract, from $6.3 billion in 2018 to $11.3 billion last year.

It’s sad UPS workers have to fight to keep from roasting in their trucks. This should have happened a long time ago especially with the rising temperatures from global warming.

    5. ‘Metropolis’ TV Series Not Going Forward Amid Writers Strike & Mounting Pre-Production Costs | Deadline

Due to labor strife and economic headwinds, Sam Esmail’s adaptation of Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi masterpiece Metropolis has been indefinitely halted. The crew was informed that the ambitious project will not proceed with production, which had been scheduled to begin in the summer. UCP was confronted with escalating expenditures associated with delaying the start of production, creating and maintaining large stages, manpower, and VFX work. The UCP chose not to pursue the Metropolis series, which was supposed to generate 4,000 employment in Victoria. The original film was set in a futuristic urban dystopia and followed Freder and Maria’s attempts to unite the workers with Joh Fredersen, the city leader.

This is something I never knew I wanted. The original film is a classic and it would be great to see it updated.

    6. ‘The Three-Body Problem’ Teaser: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Head to Netflix for Ambitious New Sci-Fi Series | Indiewire

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are teaming up with Alexander Woo to adapt Liu Cixin’s best-selling sci-fi novels for Netflix. The series is expected to premiere in early 2024 and stars Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Eiza González, Jovan Adepo, Alex Sharp, John Bradley, Saamer Usmani, Liam Cunningham, Rosalind Chao, Jonathan Pryce, Marlo Kelly, Sea Shimooka, Ben Schnetzer, and Zine Tseng. Cixin’s novels earned rave reviews for their millennium-spanning scope and meticulous attention to detail.

The books are incredible and this series will have to top the incredible Chinese TV adaptation produced by Tencent Video that premiered on 16 January 2023. This looks promising though.

    7. Jack Kirby’s son blasts Stan Lee’s legacy, new Disney+ doc | Joblo

Jack Kirby was a comic book legend, yet many Marvel fans have never heard of him. His son Neal Kirby is outraged, slamming the Disney+ documentary and defending Jack Kirby’s reputation. Stan Lee used his corporate megaphone and media to build his own mythos surrounding the development of the Marvel character pantheon. For decades, Jack Kirby was the only man standing for Marvel, until Stan Lee died in 2018, giving him more time in the business.

Kirby questioned if Lee was involved in the creation of any Marvel character, but Lee insisted that it was always his idea. Neal Kirby hopes Marvel does not take advantage of Lee’s celebrity.

This is a sad legacy for Stan Lee and it needs to get resolved. These guys are legends but have never been given equal treatment.

    8. Avatar: The Last Airbender: Netflix Reveals First Look at Live-Action Series | Tvline

Netflix is releasing a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2024. The first images of Sokka, Katara, Aang and Zuko have been released, as well as an official teaser for the series. The story centers around 12-year-old Aang, who awakens from an icy slumber to discover that he is now the last living airbender. The original animated series aired for three seasons, followed by The Legend of Korra for four seasons. Watch the first trailer below. Hit the jump to see the first pictures.

    9. ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Season 3 Arriving On Blu-ray/DVD In September; Picard ‘Legacy Collection’ In October | Trekmovie

Star Trek: The Picard Legacy Collection is a limited edition set featuring 54 Blu-ray discs, unique packaging, 7 seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, 3 seasons of Picard, 4 TNG feature films, and over 35 hours of special features. It also includes an exclusive edition of The Wisdom of Picard, a deck of playing cards, a magnet sheet featuring Captain Picard’s badges, and four custom Chateau Picard drink coasters.

    10. Gal Gadot Says She Feels “Empowered” To Start “Developing Stories” After ‘Wonder Woman 3’ Cancellation | Deadline

After Wonder Woman 3 was shelved, Gal Gadot is ready to focus on her future. The Heart of Stone actor is speaking up about her future projects as she continues to advance in the profession. Gadot will not only work on her own projects, but she will also work as an actress-for-hire. As Peter Safran and James Gunn gain control of the DC Universe, they decided not to proceed with a third Wonder Woman film directed by Patty Jenkins. Gadot expressed her appreciation on social media for the opportunity to perform her legendary character as well as the fans that backed her.

I agree about The Flash. They could have shelved it like Batgirl but they had invested too much in it so they pushed it forward and now the DCEU and Snyderverse really are dead.

Kirby left Marvel in the 70s for DC so maybe there’s still some bad blood at Marvel about it.
