Six Movies You Probably Never Heard Of To Watch In 2012

There are some huge block-busters coming this year, but there are a few smaller movies coming out you’ll want to keep an eye on.

Big blockbusters like The Avengers, the Amazing Spider-Man and the James Bond sequel Skyfall are dominating the headlines, but what about other films like Looper and Gravity?

Here’s a list of six films you’ve probably never heard of. Some are big. Some are small.

    They should all be good.

    1. The Hunger Games

When Does It Come Out? March, 23

    What’s It About?

    In
the future, North America is divided into the Capitol and 12 districts.
Each year, two young people from each district are randomly selected to
participate in “The Hunger Games.” A brutal televised show where the 24
participants are forced to kill each other. When 16-year-old Katniss’
younger sister is selected, she volunteers to take her place. She and a
young boy Peeta, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives
who have trained for this their whole lives.

    Why Should You See It?

I never heard of it till I saw the movie poster. Turns out I was in the
minority. Based on a highly successful series of young adult novels by
Suzanne Collins, the movie adaptation was developed by the author
herself. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, who played Mystique in X-Men: First Class. This film should be pretty hard-core.

    2. Lockout

When Does It Come Out? April, 20

    What’s It About?

Guy Pearce is a government agent falsely convicted of a crime. He’s offered his freedom if he can rescue the President’s daughter from a prison in space which has been overtaken by its prisoners.

    Why Should I See It?

Produced and co-written by hyper-action director Luc Besson (The Transporter) this film promises to be an action extravenganza. Plus, Guy Pearce is great when he’s given the right material. It sounds pretty similar to Escape From New York, but we’ll see.

    3. Battleship

When Does It Come Out? May, 18

    What’s It About?

Based on the board game, in the Hawaiian Islands, a naval fleet fights aliens for the survival of the Earth.

    Why Should I See It?

    Liam
Neeson. The guy makes anything good. Directed by Peter Berg this film
should either be really good or really bad. The film is going to play
with the concept by showing it from both sides. So, the audience won’t
know where the ships are either. This one’s a gamble, but I say go for it.

    4. Looper

    When Does It Come Out?

    November, 28

    What’s it About?

In a world where time travel is illegal, Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a “Looper.” A mob hit man who kills and disposes of bodies 30 years in the past. On his latest job he realizes he’s been sent back to kill himself in the future (Bruce Willis). Past Joe tries to finish the job while Future Joe tries to find the key to his survival in the young man chasing him.

    Why Should I See It?

This action sci-fi movie has an great cast in Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception), Bruce Willis (Die Hard) and Emily Blunt as Joe’s mom. The whole idea of killing yourself is a huge paradox and it should be fun to see it play out.

    5. Neighborhood Watch (2012)

When Does It Come Out? July, 27

    What’s It About?

    A
group of guys us a a suburban neighborhood watch group to get away from
their families. When they accidentally uncover an alien plot that
threatens the world, they are forced into action.

    Why Should I See It?

    This
science fiction comedy film is directed by Akiva Schaffer and written
by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. With a great cast in stars Ben
Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and others it should be hilarious. It
kind of reminds me of the black comedy The ‘Burbs (1989).

    6. Gravity (2012)

When Does It Come Out? November, 21

    What’s It About?

When satellite debris hits a space shuttle and kills all but two astronauts, Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) fight for survival. They are trapped in space with only their suits and each other as time runs out.

    Why Should I See It?

The idea of being trapped in space is always scary. A film with only two actors works on the strength of the performance and Bullock and Clooney have the acting chops to pull it off.

Between the big budget films like The Avengers, the action films like Looper and the cerebral films like Gravity 2012 should be a great year in for science-fiction and comic book fans.

What do you think? Had you heard of these films? Are you planning to watch any of them?

Heard of all of them! Besides, they've been screaming about The Hunger Games for almost a year now.
Of those listed, Lockout is the one I most want to see. Guy Pearce is awesome.

You're a fellow film nut Alex. I heard of Hunger Games, but had no idea what it was about till I asked the movie usher.
