    Update: Embedded video

Director Christopher Nolan never had plans to make one of the most successful series of movies ever in 2005. “I wanted to put everything into making one great film, I didn’t want to hold anything back.” he said. He did make a great film and his second Batman film set the bar even higher.

There are only  less than ten days left till the release of Nolan’s final Batman film and the new trailer is the best one yet. The plot of The Dark  Knight Rises has been a closely guarded secret, but the new trailer ties all the films together and reveals a few plot secrets.

The new trailer, called “Journey,” follows Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) from his boyhood fall into a well in Batman Begins to becoming a villain in the Dark Knight and his fall in The Dark Knight Rises.

Here are seven things we’ve learned from the fifth and, presumably, final trailer for The Dark Knight Rises.

It goes without saying SPOILER WARNING.

    1. Bane’s Finishing Ra’s Al Ghul’s Work

“We will destroy Gotham.” says Bane. From what we’ve read about his character bio it sounds like he’s finishing the job that Ra’s Al Ghul (Liam Neeson) started in Batman Begins. Destroying Gotham City. In the first film Ghul says, “Gotham’s time has come. Like Constantinople or Rome before it the city has become a breeding ground for suffering and injustice. It is beyond saving and must be allowed to die. This is the most important function of the League of Shadows. It is one we’ve performed for centuries. Gotham… must be destroyed.”

We know Bane was kicked out of the “League of Shadows.” Maybe this is his way of proving he can succeed where the League failed.

    2. Gotham City Will Be Isolated

Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and Officer John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) hear “We have not abandoned you.” on the radio. Blake asks, “What does that mean?” Gordon says, “It means we’re on our own.” This means Gotham City police are getting no support from the outside. There are shots of the bridges exploding. The city will be isolated.

    3. Gotham City Is In A City-Wide Riot

We’ve had lots of shots of people being dragged from their homes and banks being blown up, but we finally get shots of Gotham City in complete chaos. Most notably a hotel where the apartment doorman is helping the mob loot and drag tenants out. The under-class will rise up. The police are in a war against the mob.

    4. Bane Grew Up In Prison

We see a child behind prison bars. In the comics Bane’s mother gave birth in prison and he grew up there. In Bane’s character bio he grew up in the hard, cruel world of prison. We also see the boy’s head is shaved. I can only assume this is for lice, but it explains why he’s bald now. Besides the fact that it looks insanely cool, of course.

    5. The Rioters Have Batmobiles

I’ve noticed there are a lot of Batmobiles, known as “Tumblers.” They have the camoflauge paint before Batman painted his black. We clearly see here that the “Mob,” as Bane’s league is known, are using Tumblers. This raises a big question: How did they get them? Presumably by raiding Gotham Industries. Wouldn’t someone make the connection?

“Where’d you guys get the Batmobiles?”

    “From Bruce Wayne’s company…Wait a minute.”

    6. Catwoman and Batman Team-Up

There’s a shot of Batman and Catwoman fighting back-to-back. She takes out a guy with a roundhouse kick to the face. I guess Bruce got over her stealing his car.

    7. Batman Rises

Alfred says, “You see only one end to your journey. Sometimes a man rises from his darkness.” Bruce is at his darkest point, but he will find a way to fight back.

It’s gonna be an awesome movie.

    Official Synopsis:

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises” is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar(R) winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar(R) winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. Returning to the main cast, Oscar(R) winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar(R) winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

“The Dark Knight Rises” opens in theaters June 20th. Think you can wait?

I'm still wondering how Ra's Al Ghul's daughter works into the plot. They don't really seem to involve her in the trailers. Maybe she'll contribute as much as Ken Watanabe did in "Batman Begins" which wasn't much except as a red herring. Also of course you have to wonder how the Blake character fits into the Batman mythology.

Anyway, I suppose if anyone asked why the Mob has Tumblers as did Batman, Bruce Wayne (or Lucius Fox) could always say Batman stole a prototype from Wayne Enterprises. I mean Batman is a bad guy in a lot of people's minds, right?

A story this big with so much going on can either turn out really great or really disappointing. I'm hoping for the former.

    2. Maurice Mitchell on July 11, 2012 3:35 pm

Pat, I never thought about them dating it was stolen. Good point. I was wondering about Talia myself. She's obviously in the film, but we don't know why. Maybe a flashback? I think the Nightwing rumors are true about Blake. I haven't seem a bad Nolan film yet!

    3. Michael Offutt on July 11, 2012 4:01 pm

Christopher Nolan is a very talented director. But he really has kind of exploded onto the scene. I honestly didn't know who he was in 2005 (except for the movie Memento which I really enjoyed). Talia Al Ghul is one of my favorite characters from the Son of the Demon graphic novels, and I'd like to see that character explored. I am kind of disappointed that this is the last of the Batman films done by Nolan until someone reboots them. It's all very exciting. I have my tickets now.

I have been a fan of Batman for 30 years and own many of his vintage comic books so my speaking about this isn't just some fanboy that hopped on the scene in 2005.

    4. Tony Laplume on July 11, 2012 4:44 pm

He can't make bad movies, that's why.

    5. Alex J. Cavanaugh on July 11, 2012 5:01 pm

As I stated last week, Nolan has never made a bad film. This one will be epic. Potential to also cross the billion dollar mark. Beating The Avengers? It's at 1.4 billion, so that might be difficult.
"Where did you get the Batmobiles?" – Classic!

    6. jeremy [retro-zombie] on July 11, 2012 5:52 pm

I cannot wait to see this film… why do all the baddies what to destroy Gotham City… I get brochures all the time… come visit, come stay… live here… we have batman.

    7. jeremy [retro-zombie] on July 11, 2012 5:52 pm

      want to destroy… not what

    8. Maurice Mitchell on July 11, 2012 5:59 pm

Memento blew my mind Michael. I don't think I'll ever get over that film. Nolan has come put of nowhere to become one of the greatest directors of all time. Take that Shymalan. I know nothing about Talia, but if you say she's cool I believe it.

    9. Pat Dilloway on July 11, 2012 6:31 pm

Other thing I was wondering at lunch is if the bridges are destroyed and there's a riot, can't they just send in the National Guard by boats or send in Airborne troops by parachute? That would probably make too much sense.

    10. Liesel Hill on July 11, 2012 7:06 pm

Awesome! Already bought my tickets! Can't wait to see it! 😀

    11. Maurice Mitchell on July 11, 2012 8:13 pm

Alex, there's a first time for everything, but I find it hard to believe TDKR will be Nolan's first bad film. Beating the Avengers? I think so.

    12. Maurice Mitchell on July 11, 2012 8:15 pm

LOL Jeremy. I can't think of a safer place to live than Batman's hometown.

    13. Maurice Mitchell on July 11, 2012 8:15 pm

      Good question Pat

    14. Maurice Mitchell on July 11, 2012 8:16 pm

Leisel, it's only eight days away!

    15. spacerguy on July 11, 2012 9:53 pm

Nolan's characters are entertaining. Harvey Dent, wasn't he one sweet diametrically opposed dude? LOL, I just know watching these dark personalities plotting behind their masks will definitely elicit an emotional response from me.

    16. Maurice Mitchell on July 11, 2012 10:56 pm

Spacerguy it's only logical. Kind of like Mirror Mirror right?

    17. jeremy [retro-zombie] on July 12, 2012 12:51 am

for shame… avengers is a history maker.

    18. nutschell on July 12, 2012 6:39 pm

Well this post certainly made me want to watch the Dark Knight even more! Can't wait til it comes out!

      Meh, children's flicks…

    20. the batman on July 27, 2012 2:10 pm

Number four is wrong!!! Bane did not grow up in prison Talia Al Ghul AKA Ms. Tate grew up in prison. The youg blue eyed child that escaped the pit was Ms. Tate and the person that protected her was Bane but while protecting her he was already an adult.

    21. awkward turtle on July 27, 2012 4:34 pm

hey, let's just add more spoilers. and the entire end to the movie. congrats.

    22. Private_Eyescream on August 2, 2012 4:14 am

"The Dark Knight Rises" was worse than all of the Joel Schumacher Batman movies COMBINED. It started out horribly stupid (Bane trying to confuse the airplane crash scene investigators by transfusing a live human's blood into a dead man's body – so moronic it is just painful). Then it just piling on the stupid boring plot mess non-stop.

      29. Butlers get subscriptions to "MUSCLE THUG MONTHLY – Breathing Mask

Edition" so that they can recite inaccurate press releases on obscure

      criminals when needed.

      34. Being "Exiled" from the extremely
      secretive "The League of Shadows"
somehow means wearing a promotion to
bossing around a larger group of
die-for-their-boss thugs and not a slit
throat with an unmarked grave. Oh
and a butler would know all this, JUST
      BECAUSE.

      60. If you the Doctor diagnoses you with no cartilage in your knee and you

have been walking with a stick for some time then don't worry. Simply get

the crap beaten out of you, break your back, spend time in an underground

prison doing push ups and sit ups. Sooner or later you will be back up

walking, jumping and running like the good old days!!

65 Rather than just blowing up the atomic bomb there and then with Bruce

watching from his cell, Bane will wait patiently for the bombs core to

deteriorate giving Gotham a chance to form a resistance and foil his plan.

His plan was always to see Gotham burn but he would rather spend his time

policing Gotham, providing food rations to the populace and attending mock

      trials.

"Action Jeans" just found a link to some of my participation comments
