Does One Line Give Away The Twist Ending of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’? [Superheroes]

Fans hate spoilers, but did Bane give away the biggest twist of the movie in one line?

Image: The Dark Knight Rises Bane (Tom Hardy) and Batman (Christian Bale) in Gotham’s sewers

Be warned. If you haven’t seen The Dark Knight Rises and don’t want to know about the twist ending don’t read this post.

    !!SPOILER ALERT!!

Wikipedia describes a spoiler this way. “Because enjoyment of fiction sometimes depends upon the dramatic tension and suspense which arises within it, the external revelation of such plot elements can ‘spoil’ the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced.”

There’s one line that would have killed the film for me if I’d realized it early on. So, which scene is it?

Batman goes to Bane’s underground lair in the sewers and fights him. The Dark Knight, using an old “League of Shadows” trick to blind him.

Bane says, “Ah, you think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was
born in it, molded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was already a
man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!”

At the time it seemed like a simple line about when he was in prison and escaped. But, think about it.

The flashbacks all showed Ra’s Al Ghul’s kid leaving the prison as a child. Bane said he left the prison as a “man.” So he couldn’t have been Ra’s Al Ghul’s boy. Which means Ghul’s child was someone else…like Talia aka Miranda Tate. For me this was a huge twist, so I’m glad I didn’t pick up on it during the film.

I’m not saying this is a bad thing. It’s been said that a good twist ending has enough clues that half the audience guesses it. A bad twist ending has none, so the audience feels cheated. Too many and the audience thinks it’s obvious.

Imagine if you’d realized early on that Bane wasn’t the real villain. What if you had known Miranda Tate was planning to destry Gotham? I don’t know about you, but it would have ruined a great twist. Good thing I was too distracted by all the rampant back-breaking going on.

What about you? Can you think of any other clues to the twist ending of The Dark Knight Rises? Have you ever seen a twist ending that was too obvious or too obscure?

I remember when he said that and I noticed the discrepancy. Didn't guess who the child was until shortly before the reveal though.

The line that keyed me in was when Miranda Tate is at the fancy party and talks about bringing the world into balance, which as you remember from "Batman Begins" was the goal of the League of Shadows. Though I was starting to wonder if I was wrong by the time it got to the reveal.

I figured out the twist about 2/3rd's of the way through but it wasn't Bane's line that did it. It was the flashback scenes that showed Ra's al Ghul's child escaping without any of Bane's disfigurement- something we knew had happened in the pit.

    4. Tony Laplume on August 13, 2012 5:35 pm

There was so much speculation of Tate being Talia, I just sat there and enjoyed the ride. I was thinking more about Blake's possible turn into Robin. Which also happened, in a more unexpected fashion.

Haven't seen the movie, so I didn't read. Bummer if it's given away.

    6. Jeremy Bates on August 14, 2012 8:33 am

Very observant, whoever came up with that. I have seen the movie twice now, once for me and once for the person who was too scared to go see it.

      I missed it.

      Good point. Good post.

I had heard the rumors too Tony, but I didn't figure this twist out. Robin was a surprise.

Good one Pat. I missed that line, but it is a giveaway.

      Big surprise to me Alex.

Thanks Jeremy. That's one of my favorite lines from the film and I said, "Wait a minute…"

    14. Maurice Mitchell on August 14, 2012 5:37 pm

Jeremy, you have a sharp mind. Like I said, Its inevitable that some viewers figure out a good twist.
