A new Star Wars movie is coming, but everyone’s asking, “Who should direct?” Who do you think could do it justice?

The original Star Wars films were directed by George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand and Dave Filoni. Can anyone do as good or better?
Here are the top directors rumored for the job.
Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed)
“According to the source, Trevorrow’s film garnered him fans at Lucasfilm, one being George Lucas, the founder and chief executive of Lucasfilm before selling the company to The Walt Disney Company on Oct. 30. Trevorrow met Lucas several months ago to talk about the project, the insider revealed. While there is no word as to what story elements were specifically
discussed, Celebuzz can confirm that Trevorrow is indeed on the list of
potential names that could shepherd a new trilogy of films.” (via Celebuzz)
Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class)
“I’m hearing that Matthew Vaughn, the director of Kick-A**, Stardust, Layer Cake, and X-Men: First Class, is in talks with Lucasfilm to helm Star Wars: Episode VII. My sources tell me this is the main reason he dropped out of the X-Men sequel (which Bryan Singer is now directing).” (via Collider)
Steven Spielberg (Close Encounters of the Third Kind)
He could make it closer to Lucas’ vision since he worked with his on the action adventure film, Raiders of the Lost Ark. (via Marketsaw)
Neil Blomkamp, (District 9)
He could give it an indie feel and has great character focus.
Alfonso Cuarón, (Children of Men)
Cuaron could make an utterly realistic Star Wars in the style of the original.
Darren Aronofsky(The Fountain)
Could take it in a whole new direction focusing on the spiritual aspects of the Force
Joss Whedon (Serenity)
He’s Joss Whedon. He made Firefly. ‘Nuff said.
Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol)
“Because Star Wars should go to a director who has never done anything wrong in the history of forever.”
Those are just the names so far, I’m sure we’ll see many more. But, this week’s poll asks:

I'll throw Martin Campbell, Sam Raimi, JJ Abrams, and Kenneth Branagh into the mix!
Having just watched "Safety Not Guaranteed" Trevorrow might be a good pick. Though it's hard to say with a project that will be that large and complicated. Vaughn might make a better pick then because he already has experience with larger productions. Spielberg is too old. Whedon is too busy with the Avengers, so rule them out. Arronofsky would not be a good choice unless you want to make a really complicated and boring film no one understands, ie "The Fountain" but since the primary audience is teenagers I don't see that happening. Since 99% of the movie is CGI Brad Bird's background in animation could be helpful there.
I already know Tony Laplume with say Gore Lebinski because he wrote an article about that. It does make a certain amount of sense as well.
Anyway, I'd say #1 Vaughn, #2 Trevorrow, #3 Bird.
Spielberg is too staid and in the same mold, Aronofsky is completely not Star Wars material, too high brow. Cuaron is BORING same with Trevorrow, Whedon doesn't have time though he would be good. Matthew Vaughn is pretty good, but I don't know. Kick ass was awesome as was X-Men, but they were very character driven and the action was meh. I mean alot of the action in First Class had the I've-seen-it-before-feel. I say shake it up with Robert Rodriguez, Zak Snyder or hell Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer. Why not go all out and give it to a woman Kathryn Bigelow or Mimi Leder, Patty Jenkins or Phyllida Lloyd.

Wow I left a comment, but apparently Disqus decided it wasn't worth it. The answer for me is None of the Above. they need to go in a completely different direction. Give it to a woman. So tired of men getting all the big movies and don't try and tell me it's because we don't have the sensibility. That's a lie men tell themselves to keep us from getting big movies.

Hm. I'd vote for either Whedon, Spielberg, or Vaughn. It'll be interesting to watch things unfold.

Without a love for Star Wars the film will fail. Fans can smell dishonesty a mile away.

Great point Melissa. Why not a female director? Patty Jenkins would be fascinating.
I find it horribly appropriate that I'm still the only one to have mentioned Verbinski's name, and ironic that Mr. Dilloway is the only one to have registered this choice, because he doesn't have pretty much any of the same tastes that I do. That's life, I guess…
