Geek Bits: 5 Doctors Reunited, Superman Arrested, Star Wars Cookies and More [Links]

Welcome to “Geek Bits” where we share the geekiest bits lP of the Internet for you.  Who made Abrams produce Star Trek 2 in 3D? What was it like for ILM to make the Avengers? Where? Will Robopocalypse ever get made? How is Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D script action-packed?

    Star Trek

J.J. Abrams said he was forced to make Star Trek Into Darkness in 3D. “The studio said, ‘You have to make it in 3D if you’re going to make it, for economic reasons’.” Abrams said. “But
my feeling was I didn’t like 3D. So the idea of doing Star Trek in 3D
was ridiculous. I have trouble with 3D sometimes. I can’t see it right; I
get a headache; it annoys me; I hate the glasses; I hate the fact that
    things get so dim.”

“I approached it very cynically. And the fact is that we’ve been using techniques that haven’t been used before in 3D. They’ve figured out things. They’ve made enough movies now with this new process that they can understand ways
to eliminate some of these problems.

    “There’s this myth that if
you don’t shoot the movie in 3D it doesn’t look good. Actually, the
opposite can be true. The key for me is I got to make my 2D movie that I
wanted to make, just the way I wanted to; and it gets to be augmented
in 3D but that doesn’t detract from the 2D.”

    Doctor Who

“’Doctor Who: The Light at the End’ will be released in November and will star Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann. That’s Doctors 4 through 8 for those who came to the adventure series only after his revival in 2005 with Doctor No. 9 (Christopher Eccleston).

“But the Doctors aren’t the only classic characters making a return. Their companions are also joining them: Louise Jameson as Leela, Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, Nicola Bryant as Peri, Sophie Aldred as Ace and India Fisher as Charley Pollard.

“And for the villain, Geoffrey Beevers is reprising his role as the evil Time Lord, the Master.”

“We wanted to do a proper, fully-fledged multi-Doctor story for this very special occasion,” writer, director and executive producer Nicholas Briggs said in a statement, “and it’s wonderful that all the surviving Doctors threw themselves behind the project so enthusiastically. That’s not to say the first three Doctors don’t appear — we wanted to pay homage to the whole history of the classic series.”

    S.H.I.E.L.D

According to Huffington Post Paul Lee, ABC’s network’s entertainment president, said he is “very hopeful” about “S.H.I.E.L.D” being picked up to series after fast-tracking the pilot. He said Whedon’s script, has “some great male/female relationships and humor,” as well as all the plenty of superhero-style action. Lee added Whedon is “great to work with and very excited to be [back] on television.”

    Robopocalypse

Steven Spielberg Says ‘Robopocalypse’ Merely Delayed, Not Dead | /Film

We found that the film was costing a lot of money and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally. I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs, I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon.

    Star Wars

Here’s some news about the long-delayed live-action Star Wars TV show.

“We haven’t even sat down with them,” Lee said, referring to the principals at Lucasfilm. “We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation.” EW also provided the following summary of the series in their story:

“Sources say the live-action series centers on the story of rival families struggling over the control of the seedy underside of the Star Wars universe and the people who live within the subterranean level and air shafts of the metropolis planet Coruscant (the Empire’s urban-sprawl-covered home planet). A bounty hunter may be the main character. Set between the original Star Wars film trilogy and the prequels, the time period allows for all sorts of potential appearances from classic figures from the Star Wars universe.

“That description certainly fits with previous reports about the show. Whether Disney’s television arm will decide to green-light the show is an open question, although their decision to produce the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show as an extension of their Marvel movies certainly bodes well for the Star Wars equivalent. Check out the full story at Entertainment Weekly for more information and speculation.”

ILM released an FX reel of the New York fight scene which they said was the most challenging.

    X-Men

What are the Legal Problems with Wolverine’s Claws?

Here’s a sample “…assault with a deadly weapon can be charged without an actual weapon in
the case that the attacker used enough force to likely produce great
bodily injury. With Wolverine’s claws, it’s pretty obvious that using
them at all could cause great bodily injury and Logan should undoubtedly
know that. That means that he would almost certainly face charges of
assault with a deadly weapon by means of force if he was not careful
about the use of his claws.”

Posted my predictions for the Oscars – which you've already seen!
Star Trek HAD to be 3D? After the fact is never good.
Do we need a Star Wars TV show?

    2. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 3:31 pm

I never get why the Academy hates most action movies and yet has such a boner for Tarantino. Go figure.

    3. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 5:04 pm

best post of the super heroes and space stuff this week… i am glad i am not the only one who hates… 3d crap… i see things in 3d in real life… for me that is enough

    4. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 5:42 pm

Great tidbits, Maurice! I'm with Abrams about 3-D. Fine, but not my favorite. I especially like the bit about legal problems with Wolverine's claws. 😀

    5. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 5:45 pm

I don't like Superman…but Man of Steel looks good.

    6. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 7:17 pm

Here's one for you, why is Colin Baker afraid of Sylvester McCoy? Because Sylvester McCoy Paul McGann Christopher Eccleston! I love that joke. Seriously though, I'm so psyched for everything they're putting out for the 50th.

    7. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 7:29 pm

I'm assuming Beasts of the Southern Wild will win Best Picture. Or Lincoln. But I'm counting on Beasts. It fits the Academy pattern.

    8. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 8:28 pm

TS I knew you were doing the old "7 8 9" joke and still read it 200 times just to be sure I didn't miss anything. LOL Gonna be great

    9. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 8:28 pm

They love animals Tony, but they love period drama too. Gonna be a horse race.

    10. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 8:32 pm

I don't like 3D either and it drives me batty that everything comes out with it – even when the director is staunchly against it. Ridiculous. Won't those doctors and companions all be, like, really old now?

    11. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 8:32 pm

Tom, this one seems like it's for people that find Superman silly. So it's working

    12. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 8:32 pm

Thanks Jeremy. Theatres why I liked Avatar in 3D. It felt like seeing the way we normally see. Then there's Star Wars in 3D. Ugh

    13. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 8:45 pm

I've never seen good post conversion 3D Alex. Lincoln for the win!

    14. Maurice Mitchell on January 11, 2013 9:51 pm

I like 3D for space movies, so I feel like I'm in space. I think that's pretty awesome.
