Every “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season Poster Ranked from Worst to Best

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 poster

Here’s every Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season poster ranked from worst to best.

In 2013, Marvel TV debuted Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC. It’s the first television spin-off from Marvel Studios and follows a team of super-spies as they try and track down and contain super-villains. Led by Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) the show has run for four years and, while the ratings have been mixed, it’s been a solid show. So anticipation for the next season is high. Yesterday, Entertainment Weekly shared the first poster for season five of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Let’s look back at all the posters for every season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ranked from worst to best.

[Warning: Spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E. L.D.]

    5. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5

Season 4 ended with Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team being kidnapped and waking up in a room with a window to outer space.

ABC and Marvel haven’t revealed the reason but the most popular theory is they’ve been picked up by S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department). S.W.O.R.D. is kind of like S.H.I.E.L.D.’s cousin in the comics and its primary command-and-control headquarters are on an orbital space station known as the Peak.

S.W.O.R.D. first appeared in Astonishing X-Men #3 (2005) so some have questioned whether Marvel has the movie and television rights to the organization. But, they’ve mentioned Department H on the show and that’s been used by Fox for X2: X-Men United and Marvel for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So it’s possible S.W.O.R.D. falls into that same category of shared ownership.

The poster has the ever-present S.H.I.E.L.D. logo on the side of a spaceship. I guess. Frankly, there’s not much to hint that it’s a spaceship except for EW saying it is. It could be a shipping container or a sewer grate.

But it’s a suitably mysterious and since, it’s just a promo poster, expect a better and more detailed poster later on.

The season premiere of the show is scheduled to begin after Marvel’s Inhumans airs all eight episodes of the mini-series. Inhumans may or may not make it through its eight-week run. But, if it does, then they’ll end the Friday before Thanksgiving. Expect them to skip the holiday weekend and December to bypass Winter hiatus. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 release date will be the beginning of January.

    4. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 Poster

Season 3 focused on Coulson assembling a team of super-powered people called Inhumans. The poster mirrors the design of the first poster but it gives it a brighter color scheme to show the beginning of what (what was hoped) a larger Marvel Universe with the addition of the Inhumans.

The team is bigger with the addition of Nick Blood as Lance Hunter, Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse / Mockingbird, Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie. Luke Mitchell as Lincoln Campbell.

Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jenna Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) have some major changes to the relationship and aren’t standing quite as close as they were before.

Coulson’s looking like a rebel in his black jacket and shades. Agent May looks like a boss. Chloe Bennet has a new status and name on the team as Daisy Johnson / Quake. Brett Dalton is standing with the team now as evil Grant Ward (and later Hive) although he isn’t anything like he was in the first season.

    3. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 Poster

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D usually features C-List Marvel characters like Mr. Hyde and Quake but this season got a huge win with the B-List fan-favorite superhero Ghost Rider a.k.a Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna).

Sure he’d been in two dodgy superhero movies but he’s a headliner right? So, the poster does a nice job highlighting him. In fact, even though he’s a glorified guest star his dome takes up most of the poster. Except for Coulson’s noggin.

The rest of the team’s floating heads round out the poster except for Mac who gets a full shot to show off his pecs and lats. One for the ladies.

    2. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 Poster

The first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is filled with hope. While S.H.I.E.L.D. had been featured prominently in several Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies this was their first solo run. It’s also the first television series based on the MCU.

The poster also subtly hints at the relationships on the show. Fitz and Simmons stand together. Agent May has Coulson’s back. Grant Ward strikes a heroic pose but is noticeably separated from the team. Skye is looking warily at the team. It’s a good way of introducing the characters and the feel of the show.

    1. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 poster

After the events in Captain America Civil War, everything changed. The revelation that HYDRA had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and the US government banned the organization meant they had to go on the run.

The poster does a great job showing the bleak and shadowy nature of what S.H.I.E.L.D. had become. It’s a perfect way to show the dark tone of the second season.

The cast is in telling positions. Fitz and Simmons are on opposite sides. Daisy has her hand on a gun as a full-fledged agent. Agent May is looking fierce. Coulson’s front and center. Notice who’s facing away from the group? Agent Ward the traitor.

This poster does a perfect job of setting up the tone and feel of the second season.

What do you think of the posters? Which is your favorite? Are you looking forward to season 5?

They obviously got better as time passed. Not so much with the show though. I still watch.

You're right that newest one doesn't really say space to me. If there were a window looking down on Earth or the moon that would be something else.
