Weekend Box Office: “Avengers: Infinity War” Breaks Record Making Over $1B in 11 Days

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) Thanos (Josh Brolin)

No surprise. Marvel and Walt Disney’s “Avengers: Infinity War” held onto the number one spot in it’s the second weekend. It lost about 56% compared to its opening weekend to make $112.5 million for a domestic box office gross of $451 million and a worldwide total of $1.16 billion.

At eleven weeks it’s the fastest movie to achieve $1 billion in movie history. The Russo Brother’s beat other Marvel movies like the previous Avengers films, “Iron Man 3” and “Black Panther”.

For those keeping track here’s the list of movies that have passed $1 billion

    1. “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) – 11 days
    2. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015) – 12 days
    3. “Jurassic World” (2015) – 13 days
    4. “Furious 7” (2015) – 17 days
    5. “The Fate of the Furious” (2017) – 19 days
    6. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (2017) – 19 days
    7. “Avatar” (2009) – 19 days
    8. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” (2011) – 19 days
    9. “The Avengers” (2012) – 19 days
    10. “Iron Man 3” (2013) – 22 days
    11. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015) – 24 days
    12. “Black Panther” (2018) – 24 days
    13. “Captain America: Civil War” (2016) – 24 days
    14. “Beauty and the Beast” (2017) – 29 days

It also had the second biggest second weekend ever behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($119 mil) but ahead of “Black Panther” ($111 mil).

“Infinity War” is also setting records around the world with the biggest opening day ever in Russia. All this and the movie still hasn’t opened in China and it’s expected to be huge.

Disney is dominating Hollywood right now and set its own record as they just crossed $3 billion for 2018. This breaks its own record for the shortest time to reach that total in a given year.

Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place” dropped one position to the number 3 spot. It lost about 31%compared to last week to make $7.6 million for a domestic box office gross of $160 million and a worldwide total of $255 million. Still a great performer for a “low budget” film.

Warner Bros.’ “Rampage” moved down one position to the number five spot. The Rock’s latest movie lost about 36% over last week to make $4.6 million for a domestic box office gross of $85 million and a worldwide total of $378 million.

Walt Disney’s “Black Panther” is still in the top ten but dropped two positions to the number seven spot. It made 34% less than last week to make $3.1 million for a domestic box office gross of $693 million and a worldwide total of 1.339 billion. motley Fool pointed out that “Black Panther” not only dominated the box office in February but was “responsible for one-quarter of Hollywood’s March overall gross.” Money talks so Black Panther continues to prove that embracing diversity (and great film-making) is great for Hollywood.

Warner Bros.’ “Ready Player One” moved down three to the number 12 spot. It lost about 49% to make $1.3 million for a domestic box office gross of $133 million. and a worldwide total of $567 million.

“A Wrinkle in Time” made $387,000 this past weekend which is less than 61% over last week. Ava Marie DuVernay’s book adaptation is tracking at $126,890,235 worldwide.

What do you think of this week’s box office?
