Box Office Weekend: Solo Now Biggest Bomb in “Star Wars” History, Hotel Transylvania 3 Takes a Bite Out of Ant-Man 2

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich), Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo)

Here are the early genre box office results of this past weekend Jul 09, 2018 – Jul 15, 2018

Week 28 Box Office Winner: Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Walt Disney’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” dropped seven positions to the number 20 spot. It lost about 64% over last week for a domestic box office gross of $212 million and a worldwide total of $385 million. There’s no way this movie is going to crack $500 million and is now the first live-action Star Wars movie to make less than $500 million worldwide. You have to go all the way back to 1980 for anything close to this. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back grossed $290,475,067 domestically. But that’s after inflation. “Empire” would have made $899,334,600 in today’s money. So yeah. This sucks for “Star Wars”. But Episode IX is just around the corner and there are lots of things to look forward to in the franchise.

Thanks to the power of kid marketing Walt Disney’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” dropped out of first place to the number two spot in its second week. It lost about 62% over last week to make $28.8 million for a domestic box office gross of $133 million and a worldwide total of $284 million. It’s the largest drop in the second-week drop for a sequel within the MCU. While it’s too early to tell if the movie will recover it’s still a solid performer and more successful than a movie about a shrinking superhero should be.

Walt Disney’s “Incredibles 2” dropped one place to the number four spot in its fifth week. It lost about 43% to make $16.2 million for a domestic box office gross of $536 million and a worldwide total of $857 million. Besides being the highest grossing animated film of all-time it’s now number nine in the list of all-time box office domestic films. Considering it’s a sequel to a fourteen-year-old movie it’s stunning.

Universal’s “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” moved three positions to the number five spot in its fourth week. It lost about 46% over its third week to make $15.5 million for a domestic box office gross of $363 million and a worldwide total of $1.135 billion. It’s now the fourteenth movie in the list of all-time box office worldwide. Notably, “Jurassic World” holds the number five spot and the original “Jurassic Park” is at 29.

20th Century Fox’s “Deadpool 2” moved five positions to the number 15 spot. It lost about 52% to make less than a million for a domestic box office gross of $316 million and a worldwide total of $731 million.

Walt Disney’s “Avengers: Infinity War” is now in the number 16 spot after dropped one place. It lost 37% over last week to make less than a for a domestic box office gross of $676 million and a worldwide total of $2.041 billion. In related news, Infinity War is coming to home video this month. “Avengers: Infinity War” will be available digitally on July 31 and on Blu-ray on August 14.

What do you think of this week’s box office?
