Find out when every upcoming Marvel movie is being released and what they’re about. Avengers: Endgame just broke the all-time movie box office record. It beat Avatar to be the number one movie in history. So much for Cameron’s hope that people would get tired of Avengers movies soon.

At Saturday’s San Diego Comic-Con Marvel Studios panel Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). So far there have been 23 films including the latest movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home. That doesn’t even count movies coming from Sony Pictures that still owns the rights to Spider-Man and is making their own connected universe of movies.

Read on to find out all the upcoming Marvel movies from 2020 to 2021.

    1. The King’s Man (2020)

    Release Date: February 14, 2020

    Directed by: Matthew Vaughn

Starring: Gemma Arterton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Harris Dickinson, Matthew Goode, Ralph Fiennes, Djimon Hounsou, Tom Hollander

Synopsis: As a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them. Discover the origins of the very first independent intelligence agency in The King’s Man, directed by Matthew Vaughn, coming to theaters in February 2020.

Not everyone realizes The Kingsman series started out as a Marvel comic book. It began in 2012 with the Marvel comic The Secret Service created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons.

This movie is a prequel to the last two movies in the franchise that traces the origins of the spy movies. “We’ve got to finish off the Eggsy and Harry relationship. The final chapter of their relationship needs to be told,” Vaughn told Digital Spy.

    2. The New Mutants (2020)

    Release Date: April 3, 2020

    Directed by: Josh Boone

Starring: Charlie Heaton, Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, Antonio Banderas, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, Happy Anderson

Synopsis: Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves

The Marvel superhero movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage, and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes. The movie has been billed as a  superhero horror film.

The New Mutants was scheduled to open in August of this year but the studio has reportedly requested reshoots to add more horror elements. It’s the last Marvel movie produced by 20th Century Fox since the merger.

    3. Black Widow (2020)

    Release Date: May 01, 2020

    Directed by: Cate Shortland

Starring: Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, Ray Winstone, O-T Fagbenle

    Synopsis: TBA

Black Widow started filming earlier this year. But the release date was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con. The movie follows the adventures of Natalia Alianovna Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) a former KGB assassin who becomes a superhero. It’s set after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) but will feature flashbacks to Natasha’s past.

Florence Pugh (The Little Drummer Girl) plays Yelena Belova another former Russian assassin who is “morally opposite” to Romanoff. O. T. Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) plays Rick Mason a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and romantic lead for Black Widow. David Harbour (Stranger Things) plays Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian a Russian super-soldier similar to Captain America. No word if he’s going to be nicknamed “Smirnoff”. Set photos have shown Tony Masters / Taskmaster who’ll be the main villain in the film.

At SDCC they showed a clip from the upcoming Marvel 2020 movie showing a fight between  Natasha and Yelena choking each other out with a shower curtain in Budapest. The clip also ends with a throwdown between Black Widow and Taskmaster.

    4. Morbius (2020)

    Release Date: July 31, 2020

    Directed by: Daniel Espinosa

Starring: Adria Arjona, Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Dodd

    Synopsis: TBA

Jared Leto played The Joker in Suicide Squad and got mixed reviews. Originally he was set to return to the DC movies in a spin-off of Suicide Squad called Joker and Harley Quinn. But recent reports suggest he’s done playing the Joker. So Sony scooped him up to play Morbius.

In the comics, Morbius is a scientist who takes an experimental drug that turns him into a creature with similar traits of a vampire. The upcoming Marvel non-MCU movie takes place in a universe separate from Spider-Man.

    5. Untitled Sony / Marvel Film Sequel (Venom) (2020)

    Release Date: October 02, 2020

    Directed by: TBA

Starring: Tom Hardy (Rumored), Michelle Williams (Rumored), Woody Harrelson (Rumored)

    Synopsis: TBA

While Sony hasn’t announced it officially they only have one movie in the SonyMarvel movie that could get a sequel: Venom. The movie got mixed reviews but became a blockbuster hit for Sony and proved they could make a Spider-Man movie without Spider-Man.

Director Ruben Fleischer declined to return so they’re looking for a new director. Tom Hardy (Eddie Brock / Venom), Michelle Williams Anne Wyling), and Woody Harrelson (Cletus Kasady / Carnage) are rumored to be returning. The plot may involve the introduction of the supervillain Carnage.

Filming is supposed to start in Atlanta in November, so we’ll see if they make the release date. Hardy says that he signed up for three films so this would be the setup for a trilogy.

    6. Eternals (2020)

    Release Date: November 06, 2020

    Directed by: Chloe Zhao

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Dong-Seok Ma, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff

    Synopsis: TBA

Another big announcement at SDCC was the upcoming Marvel movie Eternals. The movie is based on a Jack Kirby comic book about aliens sent down by the powerful extraterrestrial cosmic beings Celestials to protect Earth from an offshoot of the evolutionary process known as Deviants.

“It is about this group of immortals but we will learn about humanity,” director Zhao says. The Marvel movie cast includes Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as “big, bad” Gilgamesh, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

The Celestials were first seen in Guardians of the Galaxy and one of them, Ego, is the main villain in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2. In the comics, the Celestials created the “X-Gene” which is the genetic mutation that creates superpowered mutants. This movie is setting up the origin of the X-Men.

    7. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

    Release Date: February 12, 2021

    Directed by: Destin Daniel Cretton

Starring: Simu Liu, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, Awkwafina

    Synopsis: TBA

The Mandarin is a very old villain in the comics who is a master of martial arts. He also holds ten rings created from alien metal that grant him superpowers from fire to disintegration.

Back in Iron Man Tony Stark is kidnapped by a terrorist group called the “Ten Rings”. If you watched Iron Man 3, then you know about the Mandarin. He’s a terrorist that sets off attacks all over the world. But it turned out the whole thing was a trick by Aldrich Killian to mask problems with Extremis project. He hired Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) to pose as the Mandarin. But in the one-shot Hail to the King, it was revealed that there really is a man known as the Mandarin. One who tried to have Slattery killed.

Now it’s come full circle as SDCC revealed the upcoming Marvel movie will have award-winning actor Tony Chiu-Wai Leung (In the Mood for Love) play the Asian supervillain. But the big news is Simu Liu (Blood and Water) has been cast as the Asian superhero Shang-Chi. Presumably Mandarin will be Shang-Chi’s father. Hopefully, they can get past the racist undertones in the character. So far. So good.

    8. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2021)

    Release Date: May 07, 2021

    Directed by: Scott Derrickson

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong

    Synopsis: TBA

The sequel to Doctor Strange was a foregone conclusion but it was a surprise. Mainly because of a lot of other more popular properties haven’t been announced. But he was very popular in Avengers: Infinity War so it fits. The sequel brings back Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange and Benedict Wong as the appropriately named assistant “Wong”. Elizabeth Olsen reprises her role as Scarlet Witch for the film.

At SDCC Cumberbatch promised there’ll be humor and horror. “He’ll be in a position of not knowing what’s coming at him,” he added. “We’re going to go back to trying to destroy him a bit.” Director is returning and promises “psychedelic weirdness” adding this will be “the first scary MCU film.”

    9. Untitled Marvel Film #1 (2022)

    Release Date: February 18, 2022

    Directed by: TBA

    Starring: TBA

    Synopsis: TBA

There’s an unscheduled place in the schedule reserved for a live-action Marvel Studios movie in 2022. But it hasn’t been announced what it will be. Based on the date it’s probably Black Panther 2 (more on that later). The first Black Panther movie opened February 16, 2018, during Black History Month. The symbolism is strong enough that it’s likely Marvel will keep that tradition.

But we don’t know for sure.

    10. Thor: Love and Thunder (2021)

    Release Date: November 05, 2021

    Directed by: Taika Waititi

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman

    Synopsis: TBA

After the blockbuster success of Thor: Ragnarok director Taiki Waititi is back for the fourth movie in the franchise. It’s noteworthy that this is the first property to come back for a third film. It shows how excited Marvel is for the character. “There’s nothing more powerful in the world than love,” said the director at SDCC. “And thunder,” Hemsworth added.

Besides the success of Thor 3, Hemsworth return as “Lebowski Thor” (officially Bro Thor) for Endgame was a huge hit. Natalie Portman, who previously hated Marvel is reprising her role as Jane Foster but perhaps not as a love interest.

Portman’s coming back to pick up the hammer and become the new Thor. This has precedence in the comics when she briefly became Thor starting with Thor #1 (2014). Tessa Thompson is also reprising her role as Valkyrie as the leader of New Asgard.

    11. Untitled Marvel Film #3 (2022)

    Release Date: July 29, 2022

    Directed by: TBA

    Starring: TBA

    Synopsis: TBA

Another hole in the schedule is the third upcoming Marvel movie for 2022. This could be any movie really, so there’s no point in speculating.

That’s a list of all the movies with official release dates. Now we come to the ones that aren’t in the calendar.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 (TBA)

    Release Date: TBA

    Directed by: James Gunn

    Starring: TBA

    Synopsis: TBA

After firing director James Gunn over controversial comments he made on Twitter and pulling the movie from the release schedule Disney did an about-face. They rehired James Gunn but still hasn’t announced when it would be released.

At SDCC Kevin Feige listed it as a movie that’s in the works, but didn’t announce a release date. Why doesn’t Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 have a release date? James Gunn said that the release date wasn’t announced because he’s currently working on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. Presumably he’ll get to work on GotG 3 when he’s done in 2021.

Most of the cast is rumored to return, but there will be big changes after Avengers: Endgame. Gamora is an alternate timeline version and Thor is presumably part of the team now.

    Untitled Spider-Man Sequel Film (TBA)

    Release Date: TBA

    Directed by: TBA

    Starring: Tom Holland

    Synopsis: TBA

Feige confirmed the next Spider-Man movie is coming at SDCC but he didn’t confirm the date. Back in 2017 Tom Holland accidentally confirmed that there’s a third movie in the works. “There will be a Spider-Man 2 and 3… Yeah, well now you know, sorry Marvel,” he told Allocine. “Whoops!”

Feige later confirmed it. “The first step was to reintroduce a new Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Civil War and have people leave the theater saying, ‘I love that Spider-Man. I wanna see more of him.’ I think that’s happened,” He said. “The next step is making a great Spider-Man: Homecoming and a great film that showcases Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and makes everybody fall in love with him all over again.”

Presumably, director John Watts will return but it’s not official.

Untitled Black Panther Sequel Film (TBA)

    Release Date: TBA

    Directed by: Ryan Coogler

    Starring: Chadwick Boseman

    Synopsis: TBA

It’s been confirmed T’Challa will return in Black Panther 2. Ryan Coogler’s signed on to direct and presumably the cast is returning. There were a bunch of rumors about who’s going to be the villain and if Killmonger is coming back. Feige says they’re all fake because the script isn’t even done.

The significance of the black cast and director is noted by Marvel. “We’ve always tried to find room for faces that look like everybody and not just homogenous casting,” producer Nate Moore said. “Panther obviously is a big swing that we hope to continue through many sequels and take some of these characters and put them in other franchises because I do think there’s a way to cross-pollinate in an interesting way.”

We don’t know the plot but Coogler’s talked about what he wants to do in the upcoming movies for the Marvel superhero. “Without getting into specifics, what I’ll say is something that I kind of, you know, what I struggled with at first is the difference between T’Challa in the comic books versus T’Challa in the MCU,” Coogler told Screenrant. “And I always think that the differences lie in how old he was when he lost his father.”

Untitled Captain Marvel Sequel Film (TBA)

    Release Date: TBA

Directed by: TBA (Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck)

    Starring: TBA

    Synopsis: TBA

After the blockbuster success of Captain Marvel, another movie was expected. At SDCC Feige confirmed that there are plans for Captain Marvel 2.

Feige said he has “pretty amazing” ideas for the sequel. He also pointed out the sequel could explore the time gap between the first film and Carol Danvers’ appearance in Avengers: Endgame. There’s a gap of several decades there and it could easily tell her adventures in space while helping the Skrull’s find a new home.

Nothing is confirmed but presumably directors Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck would return.

    Untitled Ant-Man Sequel Film (TBA)

    Release Date: TBA

    Directed by: TBA (Payton Reed)

    Starring: TBA

    Synopsis: TBA

After Scott Lang returned in the successful Ant-Man and the Wasp movie he returned in Avengers: Endgame. Nothing was announced for Ant-Man 3 but it’s a possibility. Most of the solo movies have been developed into a trilogy.

Director Payton Reed said he and the studio were “hopeful” about a third film and even talked about potential story points. Recently Reed said, “There’s been talk [about another Ant-Man]… [but] there’s been nothing formal right now that I know of.”

    Untitled Fantastic Four Film (TBA)

    Release Date: TBA

    Directed by: TBA

    Starring: TBA

    Synopsis: TBA

One of the biggest reveals from Kevin Feige at San Diego Comic-Con is that they’re working on a stand-alone movie based on the Fantastic Four superhero team. The comic books follow the adventures of Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), who a genius scientist and can stretch his body; the Invisible Woman (Sue Storm), who can turn herself invisible and create invisible force fields; the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), who can cover his body in flames and fly; and The Thing (Ben Grimm), who’s skin is transformed into stone and has super strength and durability.

It’s the first property officially announced from the recent Fox merger that will be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first Fox Studios Fantastic Four movies were not well-received and the recent reboot bombed.

When asked for more details he said, “All of that is spoilers, but I’m extremely excited about those characters, and about bringing Marvel’s first family up to the sort of platform and level they deserve.”

    Blade (TBA)

    Release Date: TBA

    Directed by: TBA

    Starring: Mahershala Ali

    Synopsis: TBA

Another big surprise from SDCC is the announcement that Marvel Studios is working on a movie based on the vampire hunter Blade. Mahershala Ali who played Cottonmouth in the Netflix Luke cage series will star as the half-vampire hero Blade. The vampire hunter was played by Wesley Snipes in three movies beginning in 1998.

Feige called Ali “one of the greatest actors of our time.” Ali met with Marvel right after winning a best supporting actor Oscar for “Green Room” earlier this year. “Within about 10 minutes, he was like, ‘Blade,’ and you’re like, ‘Yeah.’ It came together and there he was tonight,” the Marvel Studios head said. “It literally was just like that.”

No release date was announced but Feige confirmed that Blade would be the beginning of Phase Five of Marvel.

From Black Widow to Black Panther the future of upcoming Marvel movies is bright. Check back for more updates right here!
