Payton Reed Shared Touching Photo of Kirk Douglas and Ant-Man

See the behind-the-scenes photo director Payton Reed shares of the late Kirk Douglas. The actor was born in 1916 and died on February 5, 2020, in Beverly Hills, CA. He was 103 years old. He first started acting in the 1940s and spent decades filming movies. He appeared in classic science-fiction films like Saturn 3 (1980), 20,000 Leagues under the Sea (1954), and the original Planet of the Apes (1968).

Besides his storied film career, he collected a number of notable awards. Douglas had three Academy Award nominations, an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The American Film Institute listed him as number 17 in their list of the greatest male screen legends of classic Hollywood cinema.

His son Michael Douglas became a legendary actor in his own right and has starred in dozens of films over the years. Recently he added superhero to his resume and plays Henry Pym the original Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently director Payton Reed, who directed Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp shared a behind-the-scenes photo of Kirk Douglas in 2017. It’s captioned “April 2017, Beverly Hills. Kirk Douglas presides over Michael’s first Ant-Man suit fitting for ANT-MAN AND THE WASP” and shows Kirk looking at his son getting fitted for the Pym’s Ant-Man costume.

Kirk Douglas’ face was paralyzed from a severe stroke he suffered in 1996 but you can tell that he’s looking at Michael with a mix of pride and confusion. And what else would you expect from a father?

Michael Douglas shared a touching tribute on his father on his personal Instagram account. “It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” Michael Douglas said. “To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.

“But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great-grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband. Kirk’s life was well-lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet. Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad- I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son.”

It’s a touching tribute and a wonderful moment. Kirk Douglas never played a superhero in the movies. But in real life, he apparently played a super dad.
