Are All the Minorites in Marvel's ANT-MAN Sterotypes?

Ant-Man (2015) - Scott Lang (Paul Rudd)
Where are all the minorities in Marvel's Ant-Man? The Ant-Man trailer was released online Tuesday night and everyone got to see the first look at Marvel's upcoming superhero film Ant-Man which is one of 11 movies the studio is releasing over the next five years. In the film, Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang, a former thief who gets a suit from Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) that lets him shrink to ant size. Ant-Man's powers allow him to shrink, gives him super-strength and communicate with ants. Shrinking is the worst superpower in the world, but they've promised it will look cool and it does.

It's not as awesome as the Ant-Man Comic Con footage by Edgar Wright, but it's pretty good.

There are very few actors of color in the upcoming film and all seem to have minor roles. Hispanic actor Michael Peña (Crash) plays "Luis" and Black actor Wood Harris (Remember the Titans) plays "Gale" and no word has been given of their role although both are accomplished actors. Since they don't have last names they're probably minor characters.

The only one who's talked about his character is Tip "T.I." Harris, who plays Dave. Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr., is a rapper who has played various roles in ATL (2006), Takers (2010) and Identity Thief (2013) and usually takes the role of an urban criminal-type dude. Based on comments from T.I. it looks like he's playing a similar role in the film. So far, we only know his first name as Dave.

In an radio interview with Reggie "Smooth Az Butta" Brown for V100.7, T.I. confirms that he plays a "gangster" and a "superhero's homeboy." Because on Lang's criminal past it's not surprising, but a little disappointing. Hopefully his character has a conversion or takes on a larger role in the film.

We would hope that with all the strong Black characters in Marvel films, like Nick Fury, War Machine (AKA Iron Patriot) and Falcon they could get away from these stereotypes or at least make one of the main characters a person of color. Well, at least we have Black Panther.

Here's the official Ant-Man synopsis:

"The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios' 'Ant-Man.' Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world."

Ant-Man opens July 17th, 2015 and stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Corey Stoll, Judy Greer, David Dastmalchian, John Slattery and Gregg Turkington.

  1. I doubt they'd hire Pena for a minor role. It'll be sizable. (Heh.)

  2. The trailer looked cool, but I don't know the comic or characters, so no idea what those guys will be playing.

  3. Have to wait and see.

  4. I've always liked the Scott Lang version of Ant Man over the Henry Pym incarnation. Lang did things like name his ant mounts (Steed and Mrs. Peel, after the old Avengers show) and had a sense of humor while trying to live down his criminal past. I'm also glad that it looks like they're including his daughter Cassie, though she seems younger than in the comics. I'm not sure about the minority aspect of the film as Lang's Ant Man background was never delved into -that- deeply. I'm willing to give it a chance, though.

  5. Maybe his role will grow on him ;)

  6. I wasn't too keen to see Ant-Man, but at least the trailer made it look better than I thought.

  7. It's a hard sell David and a huge gamble. I love the character, but mainly as Giant -Man.

  8. I have not heard of Ant-Man. Thanks for the intro.

  9. Yeah, I was wondering how they could make Ant-Man look cool but yea, it's not bad. At least there's flying ant.
