6 Reasons Lupita Nyong’o Would Make a Delightful Storm in the Next X-MEN Film [List]

Lupita Nyong’o as Storm (Source: Mark Brooks)

Will Marvel ever give the role of Storm to Lupita Nyong’o? Here are the most powerful reasons why they should.

Lupita Nyong’o has won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave and many wonder what’s next for the actor. The Mary Sue asked the question of what superhero she should play and Jamie Broadnax of Black Girl Nerds started a petition asking for Marvel to cast Lupita Nyong’o as a new Storm for the next X-Men film.

Halle Berry has done an exceptional job with the role, but it’s time to pass the character on to a new actress. That actress should be Lupita Nyong’o. Here’s why.

    1. Nyong’o is an Actress

She’s won a “Best Supporting Actress” role for her acting skills carefully crafted at Yale. She is a consummate actress, but hasn’t been in the industry long enough to become jaded or refined into a “Black Actress.” Nyong’o is still an actor and Storm deserves a true actor.

    2. Storm is Emotional

Nyong’o gave an passionate and emotional speech at both the Academy Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. She is a woman of deep emotion and Storm is a woman of deep emotion.

    3. Dark Skin

It doesn’t matter what type of skin a person has, but the reality is that Storm has darker skin. Nyong’o can show that women of any shade and color can be beautiful.

    4. Nyong’o is From Kenya

In the comics, Ororo Munroe was born in New York, is the child of a Kenyan Princess and raised in Africa. Nyong’o was born in Mexico from Kenyan parents and raised in Africa.

    5. African Accent

Storm is from Africa and no doubt has an African accent. Halle Berry famously struggled with her African accent. So, it was dropped after the first film without explanation. Nyong’o has a natural African Accent.

    6. Storm is a Queen

IGN described Storm as “a thief, an X-Man, a fighter, and even a queen.” Nyong’o played Patsey in 12 Years a Slave with dignity and grace even as a slave. She’ll play Storm with the power of an African queen.

Sign the petition if you think Nyong’o should play Storm.

Do you think Nyong’o should play Storm in the next X-Men movie? If not, then who should?

She'd probably make an even better Storm. Thought it was cool she won the Oscar.

    2. Pat Dilloway on March 5, 2014 2:40 pm

Like most people I haven't watched 12 Years a Slave and have no idea what else she's been in so I really don't know how good she'd be. It can't be worse than Halle Berry's muddled accent at least.

    3. Tony Laplume on March 5, 2014 4:08 pm

Probably a pretty good fit! If they recast, that is. At this point, I don't see that happening soon. Unless she shows up in a Black Panther project.

    4. MPax on March 5, 2014 9:57 pm

She's such a lovely person, I'd probably watch her in anything.

    5. Nigel Mitchell on March 5, 2014 10:08 pm

Those are good ones. I think OsCorp will get more evil in the new movie

    6. Jamie on March 6, 2014 12:16 am

Lupita is 'The Perfect Storm'. See what I did there?

    7. Maurice Mitchell on March 6, 2014 6:38 am

Perfect Storm! LOL I feel you Jamie! Maybe that should be the hashtag! #LupitaPerfectStorm. Naaaah

      It was a wonderful moment

    9. Maurice Mitchell on March 6, 2014 6:57 am

I still remember her "I suppose it's because I am afraid." It totally took me out of the scene.

    10. Maurice Mitchell on March 6, 2014 6:59 am

Berry is talking about giving up the role. Although a Black Panther movie sounds even better.

    11. Derrick on March 11, 2014 1:57 pm

And Lupita could BE Black Panther too. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuri_%28comics%29

    12. Maurice Mitchell on March 11, 2014 3:52 pm

      Hey yeah!  I like that!

    13. Toinette Thomas on March 19, 2014 12:08 am

Of course she would be great as Storm! Oh, and I so wish there was a Black Panther movie in the making.

    14. Fergun Conell on July 30, 2014 10:40 am

All of these are pastiches of real-life corporations, such as Monsanto and United Fruit. Thought I wonder if superheroes gone bad could be just as bad.

    15. Rave on August 20, 2014 2:02 am

She should be the Black Panther (Shuri)! Storm is biracial so I can't really get behind her being Storm. Plus as BP she could have her own franchise.

    16. Maurice Mitchell on August 20, 2014 3:52 am

That is a really good idea Rave!
