DC Studios has announced two HBO Max series, following the 2025 Superman film and the animated Creature Commandos show. The DC Universe will continue on streaming services. Both new series will follow the plot of Superman and the studio’s debut feature film, with further developments in Superman’s character.
James Gunn’s DCU’s first cinematic release stars Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, and David Corenswet. Three years after introducing himself to the world as Superman, Clark Kent must negotiate the various facets of his existence, including a new romance with Lois Lane and his first significant fight with the incredibly powerful Lex Luthor. Superman is currently showing in theatres all around the world.
The next release on DC Studios’ schedule is Peacemaker Season 2. John Cena returns as the titular antihero for another round of crazy, R-rated action on HBO Max. There will be a big dose of new cast members, including Tim Meadows, Isabela Merced, Sean Gunn, Nathan Fillion, and others. Gunn, who wrote every episode of Season 2, says this new series would serve as “a direct follow-up” to Superman.
“We have so many characters from [‘Superman’], Rick Flag is in it,” Gunn recently told Happy Sad Confused. “Hawkgirl, Maxwell Lord, you know Guy Gardner, so it’s the direct follow-up to Superman, but very R-rated.”
There will be at least a few references to Superman in this season, such as the use of Maxwell Lord and the Justice Gang. Also, Frank Grillo’s character, Rick Flag Sr. of ARGUS, will return for his second appearance. He is hoping to kill Peacemaker to get justice for the killing of his son in The Suicide Squad. There will be many connections between the projects to further the brand, especially if you include a potential reference to Peacemaker’s brief television appearance in Superman.
In other news, during Warner Bros. Discovery’s earnings call, CEO David Zaslav confirmed Gunn will write and direct “the next installment in the Super-Family.” It is unclear exactly what Zaslav means when he refers to “the next installment in the Super-Family.” Since Craig Gillespie is directing Supergirl next year, we know he isn’t referring to that show.
Presumably, he is directing a straight follow-up to this year’s Superman movie. As it turns out, Gunn has already hinted that he is penning the next DC movie, which will feature David Corenswet as the legendary Man of Steel.
DC Comics’ iconic canine friend, Krypto the Super-dog, made his live-action debut with Superman. Krypto, who is based on Gunn’s rescue dog, became an unruly threat. Although he did provide Superman with all the affection and help he needed during both rest and combat.
In the future, Krypto will star in a series of animated shorts produced by DC Studios. Following Superman’s Krypto, this follow-up series will be canonical to the events that have already occurred in the film and the DCU. According to Gunn, this Superman sequel will debut on HBO Max in the fall of 2025, most likely around the time that Peacemaker Season 2 is coming to an end and Superman is starting to gain popularity on the streaming service.
