Flash Getting TV Pilot, Is Suicide Squad Far Behind? [Television]

    Arrow (2013) Deadshot (Michael Rowe)

A new Flash TV show is coming and it could be a sign that a Suicide Squad show is coming too.

Previously, we told you that Grant Gustin
    is guest-starring as Barry Allen
in three episodes of Arrow this season. The
plan was for him to appear in episodes 8 and 9 with episode 20 being an
origin episode leading to a Flash pilot. Deadline is reporting that CW
has changed their mind. Apparently, the rough cuts of the episodes were
so amazing they decided to do a full-blown pilot for a Flash
television show. The character will still be part of the Arrowtelevision universe and the creative team behind the show will be
working on the unnamed show about the “Scarlett Speedster.”
As for “Suicide Squad,” CW has indicated that they may spin-off other
    characters into their own shows.

In the comics, Suicide Squad is a
group of super-villains who secretly conduct high-risk missions for the
U.S. government under the command of Amanda Waller. The membership of
the team changed constantly, but the initial team is made of Rick Flag Jr.,
Deadshot (Floyd Lawton), Bronze Tiger (Ben Turner), Count Vertigo, Doctor Light (Arthur Light),
Oracle (Barbara Gordon) and Captain Boomerang (George Harkness). So
far, the show has established Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) as Director of the “Advanced Research Group for Uniting Superhumans”
(A.R.G.U.S.), Deadshot (Michael Rowe) and Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White).

While talking to TVGuide.com executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrews Kreisberg talked about the possiblity of making a Suicide Squad TV Show.

    Guggenheim: We
introduced A.R.G.U.S. in Season 1. We also introduced Deadshot (Michael
Rowe). We’re thinking about how to expand the Arrow’s Rogues Gallery,
and Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White) felt like he really fit into our
world. We took a step back and realized that we were in spitting
distance of the Suicide Squad. As with all things, we always have to be
really careful not to let our geek selves drive everything. It has to
be at the right pace for the show. We’ve got some really cool ideas for
how to bring Deadshot back into the show. You’re going to see that
around Episode 6. We’re hoping to get some new viewers in Season 2, so
we want to repopulate our world. The hope is that we’re moving in the
right direction towards the Suicide Squad.

    Kreisberg: Right now, we’re
taking it on a person-by-person basis. We have Deadshot as the leader
of the Suicide Squad. We don’t have any definitive plans to bring them
all together. But, as always with these things, we see what people like
    and don’t like.

While not talking specifically about Oracle, she is a member of the team in the short-lived Birds of Prey TV show back in the 1990s. Guggenheim talked about that briefly:

Guggenheim: We have an idea for how to do our version of Birds of Prey.
When you think about it, we have a lot of pieces. It’s a lot like the
Suicide Squad. As we continue to populate our world with new characters
and some returning people from last year, you start to go, “We’re really
close to that!” We saw this awesome bit of production art for a new set
that we realized plays into Birds of Prey completely. Our Art
Department wasn’t even intending that! There’s certainly a momentum
towards that, but everything has to happen in due time. With respect to Birds of Prey specifically, there’s an actress that we particularly need to make that piece work and we need to check on her availability.

So what pieces are left? Count Vertigo (Count Werner Zytle) – a
supervillain who causes disorientation and dizziness – was already
established last season as a drug dealer played by Seth Gabel, so they
could bring him back. Rick Flag Jr. which should be easy since he’s
just a soldier, and Doctor Light – a villain who controls light –
practically writes himself. I’m not sure if Captain Boomerang – an
Australian villain who throws trick boomerangs – would fit into the Arrow
Universe, but I’m sure they could make it work. He is a major Flash
villain after all and that could lead to a cross-over episode.

I would love to see the Suicide Squad in their own show. Besides
being an awesome show made up of anti-heroes, it also has two
African-American main characters which would be unique.

Official Arrow Synopsis: After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen
Amell) was missing and presumed dead for five years before being
discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. He returned home to
Starling City, welcomed by his devoted mother Moira (Susanna Thompson),
beloved sister Thea (Willa Holland) and former flame Laurel Lance
(Katie Cassidy). With the aid of his trusted chauffeur/bodyguard John
Diggle (David Ramsey), the computer-hacking skills of Felicity Smoak
(Emily Bett Rickards) and the occasional, reluctant assistance of former
police detective, now beat cop, Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne),
Oliver has been waging a one-man war on crime.

I remember watching very old tv versions of the Flash as a kid, so I'm excited to see what they come up with for this version. Of course huge universes and cross overs always make things more fun and interesting. I'll stay tuned! 😀

What David said! Flash was a favorite of mine as a kid (still have a box of comics somewhere) so very excited about a show. They can toss in any DC character they like after that.

I'd be into a new Flash if its written as well as Arrow. Arrow continues to surprise me, which is what I love about it most.

He does run fast Pat, but that's why he's my favorite! It feels like the most useful superpower you can get.

It is a surprising show Mary. Especially this season! So many twists, turns and surprising returns.

Did you ever watch the 1990s live-action show Liesel? I loved it then, but it hasn't aged well. It's still awesome though. Which is your favorite version?

    7. Maurice Mitchell on November 20, 2013 12:03 am

Oh yeah David. I'm waiting for a massive Arrow season three cross-over special between all the shows.

    8. Maurice Mitchell on November 20, 2013 12:07 am

After Flash the road is wide open for other characters Alex. I wish I still had all my old comics.

    9. Liesel Hill on November 20, 2013 1:46 am

Yeah the '90s live action one was the one I watched. I haven't seen it in years, but I can imagine that it would come off as lame, now. That's why I'm excited to see how they re-vamp it. I can remember my entire family enjoying that show. It was so fun! 😀

It really was! The theme song still rocks.
