5 Things to Know About Cyborg in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN [Movies]

Ray Fisher; Cyborg (Source: DC)
First, Falcon was introduced as the first African-American superhero in the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now DC has fired back in the multicultural arms race with the announcement that Ray Fisher will be playing Victor Stone, better known as Cyborg, in Man of Steel 2 (unofficially known as Batman vs. Superman).

1. In the comics, Victor Stone was a young man whose father worked in cybernetics. When he's attacked and mutilated, Stone's father rebuilds him with artificial limbs and parts. There's an element of pathos in the character, because his cybernetics are conspicuous and somewhat disfiguring. He's always been portrayed as an unhappy and tragic character. Check out his reaction when he first discovers what's been done to him.
2. Cyborg is pretty much what it says on the tin: a cyborg. His mechanical parts give him enhanced strength, speed, and durability. He can also interface with machines, and has various attachments like weapons he can use instead of hands. He's mainly associated with Teen Titans, but the New 52 reboot of the DC Universe placed him squarely in the Justice League.

3. Ray Fisher isn't a well-known actor, because he's done mainly theater roles. His IMDB listing shows just one credit from a short film in 2008. However, he's known on Broadway for playing Muhammad Ali in "Fetch Clay, Make Man."

4. In the bonus feature on the home version of Man of Steel, Cavill (who plays Superman) mentioned the character of Cyborg, and speculated on including him in the movie series. Cavill reportedly said, "I think he would create an incredible bridge between superheroes and humanity."

5. Most likely, they're trying to set up a Justice League movie with this. My theory is that we're going to see a lot more DC superheroes in Man of Steel 2. The studio's plan is clearly to cram as many DC heroes into this movie as they can, so they can build an audience for their long-awaited Justice League movie. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they include Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter in the movie as well.

What do you think about Cyborg in MoS2? Is it a good move or too many superheroes?

  1. I think a small appearance is fine to build up to standalone movies for the characters.

  2. I think the Avengers proved you can't have too many. They need to start building towards a JLA film.

  3. I have no idea how they're planning to fit all these characters in without it feeling forced.

  4. Awesome sauce. Looking forward to a cinematic Cyborg!

  5. I'm not sure of the storyline of Supes 2, but with each character that gets added, my expectation for its success as a film goes down.

Are there any bad guys in this movie? Or is it just more and more heroes?
