ICYMI: “Black Widow” Director, Joker Movie Scares Joaquin Phoenix and More

Here’s everything you may have missed today Friday, July 13, 2018. In Case You Missed It (ICYMI).

    1. Marvel’s Black Widow standalone movie has its director: Cate Shortland, best known for the Nazi drama ‘Lore’ via The Hollywood Reporter

Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker perhaps best known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to helm Black Widow, Marvel’s action-adventure project that will star Scarlett Johansson.

The search took Marvel to dozens of female directors and some male ones.

The move caps off a search that lasted over half a year as the studio met with over 70 directors in order to find its ideal candidate. A female filmmaker was the priority even as the search stalled at one point and the studio looked at male helmers.

    Johansson personally rooted for Shortland

Shortland, who does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer. The actress admired Shortland’s handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that tells of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied forces roll in. Shortland’s most recent film was Berlin Syndrome, a 2017 thriller that stars Teresa Palmer.

    2. GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Roars Into Action In These First Official Images From The Sequel via Comic Book Movie

    5. Joaquin Phoenix Opens Up About His “Unique” Joker Movie via /Film

Phoenix says the idea of the movie scares him

“[T]here is something very appealing about… working with [Todd Phillips] on this particular project. It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the f***ing s**t out of me or something. It might as well be the thing that scares you the most.”

He also admitted he’s been trying to break into the superhero drama for years.

“Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said ‘Why don’t they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?’ And I thought, ‘You can’t do the Joker, because, you know, it’s just you can’t do that character, it’s just been done.’ So I was trying to think of other characters, and he said ‘I’ll set up a general meeting with Warner Bros.’ And I said ‘I’m not gonna go, I can’t go to a general meeting.’ So I completely forgot about it, and so then I heard about this idea, I was like, ‘Oh that’s so exciting, that’s the kind of experience I wanted to have, with a movie based on a comic character.’ I felt like you could get something on screen.”

    6. ‘Man of Steel 2’ Would Have Shown a Less Murderous Superman, Henry Cavill Says via /Film

“The killing of Zod would have led to a wonderful reason why Superman never kills. Not, he never kills just because his dad said so one day. He made the decision himself because of an impossible scenario, to which he then said, ‘I don’t care if it’s impossible again, I’m gonna find a way to make it possible in the impossible.’”

    He added

“We didn’t get the opportunity to show the other side of it, the ‘I’m ready to be Superman now and I’m ready to show the world the best examples’. That’s where the joy and glee comes from, and that sense of warmth from the character, which is his real superpower – he makes people believe in themselves. It was a shame because it would’ve been nice, and it would have been a lovely coupling with the seriousness and the depth of Man of Steel.”

    7. Peyton Reed Says ‘Ant-Man’ Villain Yellowjacket Could Still Be Alive via /Film

“Well, I mean, you guys are making a massive assumption. There’s an assumption here that I’m not quite comfortable with. If you watch his death in the first Ant-Man, the suit is compromised. He shrinks and goes into a thing. I mean…”

He then says where Yellowjacket could be.

“He could be somewhere down in the Quantum Realm…could he still be alive down there? I don’t know, just throwing that out there.”

    8. Watch 20,000 Jedi Battle 20,000 Sith to Finally Decide Who Rules the Galaxy via io9

    9. Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker says her Thirteenth Doctor is ‘fizzing with wonder’ via Entertainment Weekly

“Well, I would say that it’s hopeful and fizzing with wonder,” Whittaker said, when EW visited the set of Doctor Who in Cardiff, Wales, earlier this year. “I have absolutely shot myself in the foot for any ADR, because I get in there, and realize I speak at a hundred miles an hour. If a plane goes over I’m like, ‘Are you kidding?’ I’ve got to try and match that speech of ‘Di-didda-di-didda-di-didda’? But essentially I think the big theme is hope.”

    10. Watch ‘Man At Arms’ Forge Sword Of Kahless From Star Trek: DS9 – Inventor Of Bat’Leth Dan Curry Approves via Trek Movie
