"Star Wars: Episode IX" Gets a New Writer. Is it Time to Panic?

Star Wars: Episode VI - The Force Awakens (2015) - Finn (John Boyega) looking nervous
We're still getting ready for the release of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Last Jedi (2017) but there's been a shakeup in the writing of the next Star Wars movie in the trilogy.

Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jack Thorne is now working on the script for Star Wars: Episode IX. The English screenwriter and playwright is known for TV shows like Skins, the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and the upcoming Sandman movie.

Back in 2014, Rian Johnson, the writer-director of Episode VII was reported to have developed a story treatment. When Colin Trevorrow was announced as director he and Jurassic Park writing partner Derek Connolly wrote the script for the film. It's said that the studio is looking for a "fresh set of eyes" on the movie and has brought in Thorne to work on the script.

There's no word if it's a complete rewrite or just a tweak of dialogue. This movie is really important to Disney and they're working hard to keep the franchise on track. So there has to be something prompting this move.

It's worrying since principal photography is set to begin in January 2018. That's only six months away. If the movie is getting a whole new script making the scheduled release date of May 24, 2019, is going to be tricky.

That said, there's no reason to hit the panic button just yet. Rogue One went through extensive reshoots after it filmed and turned out just fine.

I'll just keep the panic button close by though. Just in case...
