Benicio Del Toro play “The Collector” in Marvel films. But who is “The Collector” and what’s his importance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
In a recent interview, Benicio Del Toro talked about playing the Guardians of the Galaxy character, “When someone calls you and says ‘I need you in my movie’, it’s exciting. I like comic-book movies, and it’s totally new for me. My character is The Collector. You have many people around you who bombard you with much information… You can not go wrong.”
So, he’s aware of the power of superhero action films.
Here’s everything you need to know about The Collector, a Marvel character.
Quick Answer: Who Is The Collector?
The Collector (Taneleer Tivan) is an ancient cosmic entity in Marvel who gathers rare artifacts, creatures, and powerful objects like the Infinity Stones. He is one of the oldest beings in the universe and appears in Guardians of the Galaxy as a mysterious buyer of the Power Stone.
Who Is The Collector in Marvel?

The Collector, a Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Don Heck, first appeared in Avengers #28 in May 1966. His real name is Taneleer Tivan, one of the ancient Elders of the Universe—powerful cosmic beings who were among the first intelligent lifeforms to emerge after the Big Bang. As one of Marvel’s oldest and most mysterious characters, the Collector plays a key role in the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, particularly in stories involving rare artifacts and powerful objects.
The Collector’s Origin Explained

Billions of years ago, after the Big Bang, his species achieved near-immortality and vast cosmic knowledge. For ages, Tivan lived a peaceful and contemplative life—until a personal tragedy changed everything.
After the death of his wife, Tivan became consumed by grief and fear of loss. This drove him to begin collecting rare artifacts, powerful weapons, and even living beings from across the universe in an attempt to preserve them forever. Over time, this obsession grew into a defining purpose, transforming him into the obsessive curator known as the Collector.
As one of the Elders, Tivan possesses advanced knowledge, immense resources, and access to ancient technology, allowing him to amass one of the greatest collections in existence. His actions are often guided by a belief that catastrophic events threaten the universe—making his mission not just personal, but, in his mind, essential to preserving cosmic history.
Why Does The Collector Collect Things?

The Collector, Taneleer Tivan, spent millions of years living in quiet isolation on a distant world with his wife, Matani, and their daughter, Carina Walters. As one of the near-immortal Elders of the Universe, he believed their existence would last forever. But everything changed after Carina grew up and left—and Matani later died under mysterious circumstances. She didn’t die from natural causes. She lost the will to live.
Her death shattered Tivan’s understanding of immortality. Realizing that even beings like himself could lose the will to live, he became desperate to find a purpose that would keep him from the same fate. That purpose came in the form of a terrifying vision: the destruction of the universe at the hands of Thanos, the Mad Titan.
Determined to prevent total annihilation, the Collector began gathering rare life forms, artifacts, and powerful objects from across the cosmos to preserve them. His original mission was to safeguard existence and, if necessary, rebuild the universe. However, over time, that noble goal evolved into an obsession. His vast collection grew so large that he established entire museums and zoological worlds to contain it, ultimately transforming him into one of Marvel’s most obsessive and enigmatic cosmic beings—driven not just to preserve life, but to possess anything rare and valuable in the universe.
The Collector’s Powers and Abilities
Quick Answer: What Powers Does The Collector Have?
The Collector (Taneleer Tivan) possesses limited precognition, cosmic energy manipulation, minor shape-shifting abilities, and access to a vast arsenal of advanced weapons, alien technology, and rare creatures collected from across the universe.
Precognition and Future Vision
The Collector has the ability to see brief glimpses of alternate futures. Through deep concentration and meditation, he can identify key individuals and predict when major events may occur. While not perfectly accurate, this foresight gives him a powerful strategic advantage.
Cosmic Energy Manipulation
As one of the Elders of the Universe, the Collector can harness and manipulate cosmic energy. He uses this power to generate energy blasts, create defensive barriers, and enhance his durability in combat situations.
Shape-Shifting Abilities
The Collector possesses limited shape-shifting powers, allowing him to alter his appearance. He often chooses to present himself as an elderly humanoid, masking his true alien nature.
Advanced Technology and Weapons
Over millions of years, the Collector has gathered an enormous collection of advanced technology and weaponry from across time and space. He frequently relies on futuristic armor and powerful devices to defend himself and overpower enemies.
Alien Creatures and Living Weapons
In addition to artifacts and technology, the Collector maintains a vast “zoo” of rare and dangerous alien species. He has been known to unleash these creatures against his enemies, turning his collection into a living arsenal.
Connection to the Infinity Gems
At one point, the Collector unknowingly possessed one of the powerful Infinity Gems—cosmic objects capable of controlling fundamental aspects of reality. However, it was ultimately taken by Thanos, linking the Collector to the larger cosmic conflicts of the Marvel Universe.
Who is The Collector in the MCU?

First Appearance and Setup
The Collector first appears in Thor: The Dark World during the mid-credits scene, where he is entrusted with the Aether (the Reality Stone). This moment establishes his connection to the Infinity Stones and sets up his larger role in the cosmic side of the MCU.
Guardians of the Galaxy Role
In Guardians of the Galaxy, the Collector operates a vast museum on Knowhere, where he seeks to acquire the Power Stone. He provides one of the MCU’s earliest explanations of the Infinity Stones, making him a key figure in Marvel’s expanding cosmic mythology.
Behind the scenes, however, even the actors were kept in the dark about his full role. Director James Gunn maintained tight secrecy, and Del Toro himself described the filming process as intentionally unclear—likening it to being thrown into a scene without knowing all the details and having to improvise as cameras rolled. This secrecy reflects how mysterious and evolving the character was during production.
A Hero or a Villain?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the Collector is whether he is a hero or a villain. In Marvel Comics, he has been both—at times attempting to save the universe, and at others acting selfishly or even antagonistically.
The MCU leans into this ambiguity. The Collector is not portrayed as purely evil, but he is far from heroic. Instead, he exists in a morally gray area, driven by obsession and curiosity rather than good or evil.
Connection to Thanos
The Collector has strong ties to Thanos, the Mad Titan, introduced in The Avengers post-credits scene. In the comics, the Collector foresees Thanos’ destruction of the universe, which motivates his obsession with collecting and preserving life.
In the MCU, this connection is reflected through the Infinity Stones. The Collector briefly possesses one of these powerful artifacts, placing him directly in Thanos’ path. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos attacks Knowhere and takes the Reality Stone, leaving the Collector’s fate uncertain.
Carina and Supporting Characters
The Collector’s assistant, Carina—portrayed by Ophelia Lovibond—appears in Guardians of the Galaxy as a servant desperate to escape his control. Her attempt to use the Power Stone results in a devastating explosion, highlighting both the danger of the artifacts he collects and the oppressive nature of his domain.
The Collector’s Role in the MCU
In the MCU, the Collector serves as a cosmic broker of rare items, knowledge, and power. While much of his comic book history—such as his visions of universal destruction and deeper motivations—has only been hinted at, his presence ties directly into the Infinity Stones and the broader cosmic storyline.
His mysterious nature, combined with his connections to powerful forces like Thanos, makes him one of the MCU’s most intriguing and unpredictable characters.

It will be interesting to see which side of the coin he appears.
I hadn't heard about his appearance in the new Thor movie. Makes sense to tie it together for continuity.
Had not heard of the collector, but love the premise of a maybe/maybe not villain. Just the type of guy a girl falls head over heels for – but then finds out he's really a villain – at least at love! Truly enjoy learning the background for these comic book / movies, maybe one day I'll even beat the hubby at trivia! 🙂
This sounds pretty interesting!

I wonder if I called an actor and said I need you in my movie if that'll work. Sounds like a great part.
I love this actor and the character is so interesting. Can't wait to see him in a Gunn movie.
I was surprised too David. I'm guessing it was supposed to surprise everyone. 😉
Del Toro always has great intensity, so I'm hoping he'll play a "bad penny."
Just casually ask him what he thinks about "The Collector." When he says he's never heard of him, then look shocked and drop some knowledge Yolanda.
I didn't notice the Brainiac connection till you pointed it out Pat! If the Collector has an arc it would be ironic.
Thanks Gina!
It's worth a shot MPax. Maybe for the Backworlds trilogy? What character would he play?
He's brilliant Clarissa. What's your favorite role from him?
I first feel in love with him in Traffic but he was good in Snatch too.
Interesting choice. Of course, this means we'll need subtitles to understand anything The Collector will be saying….lol.
Maybe it's just me, but Del Toro has a serious case of 'the mumbles'.
Hate to necro your comment, but in the trailer the grunts that work for Ronan Have Brainiac's logo on their breastplates, even though this is Marvel…
