‘The Dark Knight’ Joker Clown Mask With 1960s Version Video Comparison [Video]

Joker wears a clown mask in The Dark Knight. It looks a lot like the one in the old Batman TV series. Are they the same?

In the opening of The Dark Knight the Joker (Heath Ledger) hides his face behind a clown mask during a bank robbery. In 1966 Batman aired the episode “The Joker is Wild” where the Joker (Cesar Romero) impersonates a clown. He takes the place of the lead actor who plays Canio during they’re in-opera performance of Pagliacci.

So, how different is the clown mask of The Dark Knight from the TV version? We’ve all seen the movie, but most haven’t seen the Batman episode.

Watch the video below. Let’s see if the clown mask in The Dark Knight is similar to the Batman version.

They look almost exactly the same to me.

What do you think? Is the Joker clown mask the same in Batman and The Dark Knight?

i so would love a copy of the original mask from the 60's it does have great familiarities…. nice homage to a interesting character. what doesn't kill you, makes you stranger…

It's painted better by Nolan's team. So there!

The eyebrows are the big difference to me, but it sure looks like a tribute to the old mask to me!

I saw the Batman episode today and was instantly reminded of the Dark Knight. I was actually blown away buy it. I wonder if Nolan knew this?

    8. Maurice Mitchell on December 23, 2012 3:37 pm

Vivian, I wonder that myself. It's really obvious, but no one talks about it. Good question. Thanks for the comment.

They're not the same. they're two different masks. They have a similar design but each element of the mask is done differently. Those who spent money on a movie ticket won't just be seeing rehashed masks 😉 The eyebrows are different. The contours and color patterns of each mask are different.

Dudes, he doesn't play a clown during an opera, he plays the title role of Pagliachi, the opera about a sad clown.

You're right StereoPhilips, but here's where it gets tricky. Technically, he's taking the place of the lead actor who plays Canio who plays the clown Pagliaccio in a commedia troupe performance. So he's impersonating an actor who's playing a clown. I tried to rewrite it so it's clearer though.
